5E Template- Science Name:Whitney Hanner Content Area: Science Date: 11/14/09 Grade Level(s):7 Topic(s): Organelle Review Standards (NSES or Benchmarks) NSES: Structure and function in living systems Benchmarks: -All living things are composed of cells, from just one to many millions, whose details usually are visible only through a microscope. 5C/M1a -Within cells, many of the basic functions of organisms—such as extracting energy from food and getting rid of waste—are carried out. 5C/M3a Standards (SOL) LS.2 a.) cell structure and organelles (cell membrane, cell wall, cytoplasm, vacuole, mitochondrion, endoplasmic reticulum, nucleus, and chloroplast); Objectives (UKD’s) K: Key vocabulary: cell membrane, cytoplasm, vacuole, mitochondrion, endoplasmic, reticulum, nucleus, & cells. Plant cells are rectangular and have a cell wall and chloroplasts but animal cells do not. U: Each organelle plays a unique role in a cell. D: Design a model of a cell using the supplies given. (Synthesis) Represent each organelle present in the assigned cell. Recognize which cell you have (plant/animal). Topic/Essential Question Organelle Review: How does a piece of candy symbolize an organelle? What is its function? Materials & Resources Cookies (round and rectangular) Frosting Candy Popsicle sticks Organelle Checklist Cell worksheet (animal and plant) Food Art power point Camera ELMO (opt) Safety Considerations Use Popsicle sticks to spread frosting instead of knives Engage – Time Estimate __3____ Food art. Show photographs of food made into some art form via power point slide. Allow this slide to remain on the board as students work. Delve right into the activity after explaining the directions. The expectations of the activity are to represent a cell with the cookies and the organelles with the candy. With each depiction they must make note of which candy represents the organelle and why on their Organelle Checklist. Explore – Time Estimate __20____ Create a model of a cell using supplies provided at the table (Cookie, candy, frosting). As students work on their cell activity refer them back to their Organelle Checklist. They must complete the checklist and get ready to present it to the class. No one may take even a bite of their cookie until he/she has presented and I have photographed his/her cookie. Explain -- Time Estimate __15____ Students present their cell and which candy represents each organelle. They could use the ELMO so everyone can see it. Students must also state why the organelle is best represented with the chosen candy. The hope is that there is some thought between the selection and the function or depiction of the candy. Once the presentation is over and I have taken their photograph he/she may begin eating his/her cookie. Extend -- Time Estimate __7____ Label and describe the functions of a cell’s organelles using the provided cell worksheet. This cell worksheet should differ from the cell they created with the cookie activity. For example, if a student made an animal cookie model then he or she should receive a plant cell worksheet. Evaluate -- Time Estimate ________ Grade the cell worksheet. If class time remains we’ll switch cell worksheet with a neighbor and grade as a class. Otherwise, I will complete on my own. Plans for Diversity ELL: No text used. Students with questions will be given the opportunity for one-on-one assistance as well as help from tablemates. Gifted Students: If students finish their cell cookie early they can create a poster-sized table with each organelle listed. In the other column students should write a quick and helpful way to remember the function of each (ie nucleus=brain). Short Attention Span: FOOD!! Kids love candy and this activity will be sure to keep them engaged. Connections This is the fourth lesson of the unit and the third day discussing cell organelles. It serves as a final review of organelles and the differences between plant and animal cells. My hope is that that through repetition (several presentations of organelles and their functions) and modeling, students will retain the key organelles and its functions.
