Edible Cell Rubric
100 points
Objective: To synthesize an edible cell that has organelles similar in shape and
function to a real plant or animal cell.
Materials: You can use materials such as jello, pizza, cake, etc for the main part
of the cell (the structure). You can use candies or food to represent the
organelles. Some examples include:
Organelle
Cilia
Ribosomes
Food used to represent
Twizzlers
Nerds
*Be Creative*
**You are to make either a plant or animal cells. Cells must have the following
1)
2)
Animal cell models must include the following organelles:
cell membrane
nuclear membrane
centrioles
nucleolus
chromatin
nucleus
cytoplasm
ribosomes
golgi apparatus
rough endoplasmic reticulum
lysosomes
smooth endoplasmic reticulum
mitochondria
vacuole
Plant cell models must include the following organelles:
cell membrane
cell wall
chloroplasts
chromatin
cytoplasm
golgi apparatus
mitochondria
nuclear membrane
nucleolus
nucleus
ribosomes
rough endoplasmic reticulum
smooth endoplasmic reticulum
vacuoles
Point Distribution: 100 total
50 points- proper labeling of organelles and how accurately they represent the actual
shape of the real organelles. You will need to label them any way that you want, but
toothpicks with computer generated organelle names have worked well in the past.
30 points- You will be quizzed when you present your cell to me. I will ask you 3
questions about your cell’s organelles and their functions/shape. 10 points each
question.
20 points- Subjective grade based on overall creativity and neatness of the cell.
