Definitions of
Cell Structures and Their Functions
-Cell wall: Non-living structure surrounding plant cell; provides
shape and support
-Cell membrane: Enclosed the cell, controlling the inward and
outward flow of materials
-Chloroplasts: Contain chlorophyll, used by plants to make food
-Cytoplasm: Jelly-like material where chemical processes take
place
-Mitochondria: Rod-like structures that control the release of
energy in cell processes
-Vacuoles: Fluid-filled sacs that store different substances in liquid
form
-Nucleus: Contains DNA; stores information used to control cell
activities
-Ribosome: Particles in cytoplasm that build the proteins needed by
a cell
-Endoplasmic reticulum (ER): Membranes that run throughout the
cytoplasm; form tubes through which materials move to all cell
parts
Instructions for Building Cells
-Place all of the materials you’ve been given out in front of you.
-Build the plant cell first by using the rectangular piece of bread.
-Unwrap the Fruit Roll-up and wrap it around the outside of the
bread to represent the cell wall.
-Spread approximately ½ of the peanut butter on the bread.
-Place ½ of all of the other organelles on the peanut butter except
to place all of the green jelly beans on this piece of bread, as this is
the plant cell.
-Build the animal cell by using the piece of round bread.
-Follow steps 4 and 5 above with the exception of not using the
green jelly beans.
-Raise your hand so that the teacher will come and check your cell.
-Be prepared to describe the function of each organelle.
-Dispose of your models by either eating them or placing them in
the trash.

Edible Cells Grading
Completion – The student will receive one point for each organelle
correctly placed.
Communication – The student will receive one point for each
organelle correctly identified and described.
The grading scale is as follows:
32 – 36 points – A
29 – 31 points – B
25 – 28 points – C
20 – 24 points – D
19 points and below – F
