The Incredible Edible Cell
Your job is to create a model of a cell made only out of foods that you can eat! You
will use several different food items representing the organelles and structures found in a plant
or animal cell to create an edible model of a cell. Be creative! Think carefully about the shape and
size of the food items you choose and make sure that they are a good fit for the part of a cell that
they represent. Decide which type of cell you will create and use the attached paper to help you
plan out what materials you will need. (HINT- Pinterest has some great ideas if you’re stuck!)
This project will be due Monday, December 14th. We will be having a theme sharing that day (I
will let you know the specific time and details when it gets closer). You need to be able to
describe what parts of a cell your food items represent and what their job is. After our theme
sharing we will have a feast on our cells to celebrate the end of our unit!
You may work on your own or with ONE other person (from either 5th grade class). If you work
with a partner you will create ONE cell but BOTH of you need to be able to explain your cell since I
will grade your knowledge separately. Happy creating!
Edible Animal Cell
Organelle/Structure
Function
Lysosome
breaks down larger food molecules into
smaller molecules, digests old cell parts
Cell Membrane
controls the movement of materials in/out
of the cell
Mitochondria
breaks down sugar to release energy
“Power house”
Vacuole
stores food, water, and waste (very large in
plant cells)
Nucleus
controls all cell activities
“Brain”
Cytoplasm
jelly-like substance that supports and
protects cell organelles
Ribosomes
synthesize (make) proteins
Golgi Body
modify (change) proteins made by the cells
Rough and Smooth ER
transport goods and materials throughout
the cell
“Cell Highway”
