The Incredible (and possibly edible) Cell Project
You are required to construct a model of a plant or animal cell. You may choose to
create either an animal cell or a plant cell (NOT both). You may also choose to make your
cell model edible or inedible.
If you choose to make an edible cell model the entire cell must be made from
materials that can be eaten. Please avoid using materials that have an unpleasant odor as
they may be in the classroom for a few days. It has also been my experience that the use
of “Jello” does not work well on these projects. Cakes / cookies as the base for the cell
usually works best. IF you plan on eating your cell AFTER it is graded, you must provide the
plates, forks and napkins to do this.
Inedible cells must be made from materials that are not edible. Students may choose
to use such things as, pipe cleaners, buttons, recycled products, clay, Styrofoam and the
like. All projects must be a model created by the student and not simply a drawing of a
plant or animal cell.
Each model must include all of the following organelles:
Cell wall (if plant cell)
Ribosomes
Chloroplasts (if plant cell)
Mitochondria
Nucleus
Vacuoles
Nucleolus
Lysosomes
Golgi bodies
Cell Membrane
Endoplasmic Reticulum
Cytoplasm

Grading:
Grade will be based on the following guidelines.
 Is your name on the project?
 Is the cell identified? Tell if it is a plant or animal cell.
 Are all the organelles represented in your model? (12 for plant cells,10 for
animal cells)
 Are the organelles correctly labeled? Each organelle MUST be labeled with its
name and function (use pages 20-21 in your text for help). You may label each
organelle on the cell with toothpicks and a tag (shown below) or use a key.
**Refer to the examples we discussed in class.**
Mitochondria
Powerhouse of the Cell
 Are the relationships between the parts shown correctly? Such as:
 Are there ribosomes on some of the endoplasmic reticulum?
 Is the endoplasmic reticulum located near the nucleus?
 If a plant cell, are the chloroplasts near the vacuole?
You may use the following materials, but they cannot count as part of the cell:
o container
o plastic wrap
o paper
o toothpicks
