The Incredible Edible Plant/Animal Cell
You will be required to construct a model of a plant OR animal cell. All models must
be made of edible materials (Exception: Styrofoam, Saran Wrap, Container, Foil, or paper).
Avoid using materials that have an unpleasant odor or that may be considered offensive!
Each Model must include the following organelles:
Cell Wall (plant only)
Cytoplasm
Ribosomes
Lysosomes
Peroxisomes
Cell Membrane
Endoplasmic Reticulum
(Smooth and Rough)
Mitochondria
Chloroplasts (plant only)
Microfilaments (animal only)
Nucleus
Golgi Bodies or Complex
Vacuoles
Microtubules (animal only)
Suggestions
o You may make your item out of any edible item: cookies, cake, brownie, pizza,
tostadas, jell-o, rice crispy treat, or anything else you may think of.
o You may use: gumdrops, Mike and Ike’s, bubble gum, jawbreakers, licorice, candy,
fruit, pasta, beans and etc… to represent each part.
o You may use for containers: Ziploc bags, Ziploc containers, bowls, or etc…
o Have Fun and Be Creative!!!
Check-off List - Guidelines
o Name, Date, and Class on Project
o Identify it as a Plant or Animal Cell
o The model is a 3-D representation of a Plant or Animal Cell
o All the organelles are included (11 each for plant and animal)
o Organelles are correctly labeled either by flags with toothpicks or with a key. Each
organelle must be labeled with its name and function.
o Ribosomes found on the Endoplasmic Reticulum.
o Endoplasmic Reticulum is near the nucleus
o Chloroplasts are found near the vacuole
o All materials are acceptable for the project.
o Model less than 12” inches on any side.
Bonus Points: You could be rewarded with a bonus (5 extra credit points) and a special
Science prize if your project is selected to be the MOST ACCURATE, MOST
ATTRACTIVE, OR MOST DISGUSTING. Students of both classes will vote to decide the
winner in each category.
Project Due:
Friday, march 26, 2010
Sample Label:
Mitochondria
Powerhouse or Provides Energy
for the Cell.
