All organisms are made of cells.
Your own body has more than 200 kinds of cells. Plant and animal cells
have several basic structures, called organelles, that help them perform life processes. Organelles have
functions that help keep the cell alive.
1.
Cytoplasm –this is a gel-like liquid that fills
the region between the nucleus and the
cell membrane. It is mostly made of
1
2
5
water and organelles float in it. The
cytoplasm supports all of the cell’s
structures.
2. Vacuoles – a membrane covered
structure for storage. It can store
water, food, and wastes.
3
3. Cell membrane – this flexible wrapping
surrounds animal cells. It is a layer
around the outside of the cell. It
4
controls what materials move in and out
of the cell.
4. Mitochondria – these supply energy for
the cell because they break down food;
often called the “power house” of the
cell
5. Nucleus – control center of the cell that
controls all of the cell’s activities. Cells
grow, move, and may divide at some
point. All of these activities are
controlled by the nucleus.

6. Chloroplasts – green structure when the energy
from sunlight is used to produce food for the plant.
These structures are green because they contain
chlorophyll which is a chemical that absorbs sunlight.
7. Cell Wall – plant cells have an additional outer
7
covering called the cell wall. It is a stiff outer layer
that provides the cell with strength and support.
