Incredible Cell Project Name: ___________________________________ Organizer Due: __________________________ Presentation: ____________________________ **Cell Model is due day of presentation. Directions & Rubric So you know all about cells/cell organelles and how they work? Prove it! Select and complete ONE of the following projects to reinforce our study of cells. It is your choice on whether you choose to create either a plant cell or an animal cell. Whatever you decide, be prepared to describe your work on the day the project is due. You will have three weeks, outside of school, to work on this project. You will have time in class to discuss your project selection with others and ask your teacher questions, however there will not be time in class for you to create your project. That part of the project must be done outside of school. Points will be deducted if the organizer is turned in late or if your project is not ready on your scheduled presentation date. OPTION ONE: 3D Model of a Plant or Animal Cell Make a three dimensional model of a plant or animal cell. Identify the type of cell (plant or animal). Include all of the appropriate organelles (11 for plant cells, 9 for animal cells) as listed in your organizer and label each directly on the model. When choosing your materials, you must keep the size and function of the organelle in mind. The materials that you choose must represent that part of the cell in some way. For example: Cytoplasm is a clear, jellylike substance. Since cytoplasm is a clear jellylike substance, I used applesauce in my cell model because it has a similar texture. Use whatever materials you like (Styrofoam, wood, clay, etc.) Be creative!!! Make sure you label all of the organelles with the correct name on your final product. OPTION TWO: Design and Create a T-Shirt with a Picture of the Cell Design and create a T-shirt with a picture of a cell on it. Identify the type of cell (plant or animal). Include the appropriate organelles (11 for plant cells, 9 for animal cells) as listed in your organizer and label each directly on the shirt with the functions listed either on the front or back of the shirt. Use fabric paints, puffy paints, scraps of fabric, beads, ribbon, or anything else you would like. You may not find a picture of the cell on the internet and use iron-on paper to attach it to a t-shirt. It must be designed by you! Use your creativity!!! Marshall in the Middle © 2015 OPTION THREE: Cell Analogies Collage Webster defines analogy as: “A comparison between two things which are similar in some respects, but otherwise are different; an explanation of something by comparing it with something else. For this project option, you will need: poster paper, text with an illustration of either a plant or animal cell to refer to, as well as: scissors, glue, colored pencils/markers, magazines, and/or newspaper ad sections. If you select this project you will need to: Step 1: Draw a plant or animal cell in pencil in the center of the poster board. Include the following organelles (make sure to only include structures that are found in your cell) Step 2: Correctly identify your cell as a plant cell or an animal cell. Step 3: Find a magazine/newspaper picture of an everyday object that has a similar function (or use) to representeach organelle. (You may also draw the everyday object if you can’t find a picture). Write an analogy to show the similarity between the cell part and the everyday object. Be sure to explain the reasoning behind your analogies. (For example: “The cell membrane is like the doors of a restaurant, it controls what come in and out of the cell just like the restaurant doors let people enter and leave.”) Step 5: Paste the pictures of everyday objects at the edges of the poster board. Label the pictures with your neatly written analogies and draw an arrow to the correct organelle in your cell drawing. Step 6: Be certain that there are at least 10 analogies. Note: You may not copy any of the cell analogies that are in the school cell analogy activity that we complete in class. GRADING POLICY: Total: 50 points 1) Incredible Cell Organizer (30 points): * Plant cell & Animal cell columns – 10 points (1/2 point for each correct response) * Function – 10 points (1 for each structure) * Justification for why you used/chose each material - 10 points (1 for each structure) 2) Followed specific instructions for chosen project (5 points):. 3) Organization, Neatness, Creativity & appeal (5 points): 4) Cell Model- (10 points): * All parts of the cell on the Incredible Cell Organizer are included in the cell model. * Materials are comparable to the structure, size, and function of that part of the cell.
