Cell Analogy Project (30 points) Use An Analogy To Describe The Function Of A Cell Your analogy must compare the function and structure of a living cell with a common nonliving system or event, such as a shopping mall, baseball game, hockey team, getting ready for a date, or baking a chocolate cake. BE CREATIVE !!!!! Using an analogy: Describe.the structure and function of a particular item or aspect of your nonliving system and then describe the structure and function of the cell organelle you are comparing. Example: Shopping Mall Function • Wall and Doors • Cell Organelle Allow people merchandise, and trash in and out Give shape to building Function • Cell Membrane Allow substances to leave and enter the cell Food Court Informational “You Are Here” Map Include and Describe the functions of the following organelles: nucleus chromatin cytoplasm golgi apparatus ribosomes Check List For Project: Descriptions of the nonliving system Descriptions of the cell organelle functions Poster Board Colorful Graphics Neatness/Effort straight lines cell membrane lysosome mitochondria endoplasmic reticulum graphics labeled printed neatly some graphics! 10 pts 10 pts 2pts 2 pts 2 pts 4 pts Cell City Analogy What do you think of when you hear the word cell? Do you picture a simple organism with a nucleus and not much else? What does it take to keep a cell alive? In this lesson, you will learn that cells are far from simple. What if I told you a cell was as busy as a city full of people? The following story describes some of the structures and functions of a city. It is your job to match each part of the city to the part of the cell that has a similar function. Use your notes and textbook to help you!!!! Match the parts of the city (underlined) with the parts of the cell. Explain the function of each cell part and WHY it is matched with each part of the city. 1. Mitochondria = _________________________________________________________________ 2. Ribosomes = ____________________________________________________________________ 3. Nucleus = ______________________________________________________________________ 4. Chromatin =_____________________________________________________________________ 5. Endoplasmic Reticulum = _________________________________________________________ 6. Golgi Apparatus = _______________________________________________________________ 7. Protein = _______________________________________________________________________ 8. Cell membrane = _________________________________________________________________ 9. Lysosomes = ____________________________________________________________________ 10. Nucleolus = _____________________________________________________________________ In the city of Amoeba, the main export and production product is the steel widget. Everyone in the town has something to do with steel widget making and the entire town is designed to build and export widgets. The town hall has the instructions for widget making. Widgets come in all shapes and sizes and any citizen of Amoeba can get the instructions and begin making widgets. Widgets are generally produced in small shops around the city. The small shops that make widgets can be built by the carpenter’s union (whose headquarters are in town hall). After the widgets are constructed, they are placed on special carts attached to a rail system which can deliver them anywhere in the city. In order for a widget to be exported to another city, the carts take the widget to the postal office, where the widgets are packaged and labeled for export. Sometimes widgets don’t turn out right or are worn out. These rejects and used widgets are sent to the scrap yard where they are broken down for parts or destroyed altogether. The town powers the widget shops and carts from a hydroelectric dam that is in the city. The city is enclosed by a large fence and only the postal trucks and citizens with proper passports are allowed in and out of the fence.
