Lesson Plan
Subject: Biology – Cells
Grade Level: 10
Instructor: Patrick Hogan
Date: 23 October 2013
Ohio Academic Content Standards
1. Grade 10, Life Sciences, indicator 2
a. Compare the structure, function and interrelatedness of cell organelles in
eukaryotic cells (e.g. nucleus, chromosome, mitochondria, cell membrane, cell
wall, chloroplasts, cilia, flagella) and prokaryotic cells.
2. Grade 10, Life Sciences, indicator 3
a. Explain the characteristics of life as indicated by cellular processes including
i. Homeostasis
ii. Energy transfers and transformation
iii. Transportation of molecules
iv. Disposal of wastes
v. Synthesis of new molecules
Learning Objectives:
At the conclusion of this lesson, students will be able to:
Identify the organelles found in Eukaryotic cells
Explain and Describe the functions of those organelles.
Be able to recognize the functions and apply that knowledge to real world ‘city’ idea.
Use previous lessons to begin cell parts and functions worksheet.
Anticipatory Set:
Oral discussion of cell parts and functions (this can be pretty dense material so drilling it
everyday will help with student retention).
Instructional Strategies & Learning Tasks:
1. After reviewing the information of previous lessons, student will watch 2 short videos
pertaining to the cell (cell city on youtube). As videos are being played explain what the
students are watching. Pause video to discuss when needed.
2. Once videos are finished the students break back down into pairs to finish their city cell
analogies (will be turned in at end of class or will be homework for Thursday).
3. As students finish their analogies have cell parts/functions and cell cut out worksheets
ready to hand out (due on Friday) for them to work on. This will continue to hit on the
major themes of this unit.

Lesson Plan
4. Students will spend rest of class working on these assignments.
Resources and Materials:
1. Cell parts/functions worksheet
2. Cell cut out worksheet
3. Coloring untensils
4. Smartboard (with youtube video)
5. Scissors and glue
Accommodations for Special Learners:
1. Students will continue to get assistance on city analogy.
2. Oral instructions for next two assignments will be given individually
Informal and Formal Assessment:
1. Informal Assessment: Listening to questions during video, classroom discussion/review
of previously covered material, and paying attention to overall classroom understanding
of material.
2. Formal Assessment: Final cell as city project will be collected and graded.
