CELL CITY
PROJECT
Introduction:
Each individual cell operates much like a city does. Each organelle in the cell does a job that
allows the whole cell to function properly. In a city, there are many different jobs that have to be
done in order for the City to run smoothly. For example, a city must have a waste management
system (trash). Could you imagine what a city would be like if there wasn’t anyone picking up
the trash? In this project, you are going to compare the organelles in a cell to the jobs needed to
run a city (or theme park, store, school, factory, etc.).
 GOAL: Create a 3-D model & video that:
o Shows metaphors comparing each of the organelles in a cell to other structures in a city
(or theme park, store, school, factory, etc.)
 (example: cell membrane = city limits)
o Includes each of the organelles from the Organelle List below
 Organelles must be clearly labeled
 Complete the Cell City Key to identify the connection between your metaphors
and the function of the organelles
 Remember: A Plant City* has a cell wall, chloroplasts, and large vacuoles - An
Animal City does not but it does have a centriole.
 BE CREATIVE! A cell is also like a theme park, factory, school, store and much more…
 Objective:
o This project is designed to help students understand how the parts of a cell work
together in order for the cell to function. In the project, students make analogies
between a plant cell and a city, ball park, factory, school etc. Students should use their
creativity to decide what they want to compare their cell to.
 Instructions:
o Students may work individually or in groups of up to 3. Each student must be assigned at
least 3 organelles but is still responsible for knowing each other’s organelles.
o Each group must distinguish their cell as animal or plant and create each of the
following.
1. Cell Model:
a. The project must be 3-D (no drawings or posters) with buildings that represents the cell

and all of its organelles.
Label your cell as either a plant or animal cell.
Cell must include the following organelles: cell membrane, cell wall (plants), cytoplasm,
chloroplast (plants), vacuole, nucleus, ribosomes, lysosomes, nucleolus, rough
endoplasmic reticulum, mitochondria, golgi bodies, and centrioles (animals).
Organelles should be labeled.
The labels should include the function of each organelle on the back.
2. Cell City Analogy:
a. Answer the questions on the sheet attached.
3. Cell Video:
a. Write a story, news cast, skit, rap, or song that introduces each of the major parts of a
eukaryotic cell and describes what each part does. (you can even use the green screen)
b. Use your iPad or other forms of technology to create a video (YouTube, Vine, etc.) to
share with your teacher and the class.
c. Make sure that every organelle is covered in the video:
d. Must include the following organelles- cell membrane, cell wall (plants), cytoplasm,
chloroplast (plants), vacuole, nucleus, ribosomes, lysosomes, nucleolus, rough
endoplasmic reticulum, mitochondria, golgi bodies, and centrioles (animals).
You will get two days of class time to work on this, so use your time wisely!
