Part 2 Cell Analogy Project
Learning Objective: To demonstrate an understanding of a cell’s structures and their
functions.
Activity: An analogy is a way of explaining something by comparing it to something
else. You will compare a cell and it’s functions to something in real life, such as an
amusement park, a school or classroom, a restaurant, a sports stadium, a factory, etc.
You may not do a city because we already did that in class. Below, explain what your
analogy is and why you chose it. Then write a sentence for each of the cell parts,
explaining why you matched it up with the part from your real-life application.
My Cell Analogy: I am comparing a ____________________ cell to _____________
___________________________________ because _________________________
____________________________________________________________________.
1. I chose ________________________________ to represent the CELL MEMBRANE
because_____________________________________________________________
____________________________________________________________________
just like the CELL MEMBRANE __________________________________________
_____________________________________________________________________.
2. I chose __________________________________ to represent the CYTOPLASM
because __________________________________________________________
____________________________________________________________________
just like the CYTOPLASM ________________________________________________
_____________________________________________________________________.
3.
I chose __________________________________ to represent the NUCLEUS
because ____________________________________________________________
____________________________________________________________________
just like the NUCLEUS __________________________________________________
_____________________________________________________________________.
4.
I chose __________________________________ to represent the
MITOCHONDRIA because _____________________________________________
____________________________________________________________________
just like the MITOCHONODRIA ____________________________________________
_____________________________________________________________________.
5.
I chose __________________________________ to represent the VACUOLES
because ____________________________________________________________
____________________________________________________________________
just like the VACUOLES _________________________________________________
_____________________________________________________________________.
ONLY COMPLETE # 6 and #7 if your analogy includes a plant cell.
*6. I chose __________________________________ to represent the CELL WALL
because ____________________________________________________________
____________________________________________________________________
just like the CELL WALL _________________________________________________
_____________________________________________________________________.
*7. I chose __________________________________ to represent the
CHLOROPLASTS because _____________________________________________
____________________________________________________________________
just like the CHLOROPLASTS ___________________________________________
_____________________________________________________________________.
Draw a diagram of your analogy on the next page. For example, if you chose to
compare a cell to an amusement park, then draw the amusement park. Label each part
of your diagram that you compared to a cell organelle. Next to it, write the name of the
cell organelle that it functions as. Example: Entrance Gate to Disneyland/Cell
Membrane, Popcorn stands/Mitochondria. **Color your diagram.
Part 1: 3-D Cell Model
Learning Objective: Label and describe a plant or animal cell’s
organelles and their functions.
Activity:
1) Build a 3-dimensional model of a plant or animal cell using any materials you wish.
Please do not build anything that will not fit on your desk. 12” by 12” or smaller is best.
Label the following organelles of your cell:
nucleus
mitochondria
vacuole
cell membrane
cytoplasm
*cell wall (only if you are building a plant cell)
*chloroplasts (only if you are building a plant cell)
2) Make a short video describing your cell and the functions of each organelle within it.
You may video yourself describing your cell, you may use 30 Hands, Keynote, or
another app of your choice, as long as your video can be saved to your camera roll.
A video of ideas for cell projects is available using the following link:

You can also view the video from our classroom website. Visit the “Learning Links and
Resources” page, then visit the “Science” page underneath it. Go to “Cells Learning
Videos” and Click on the “Plant and Animal Cell Projects” video.
Project Due Date:
Friday, November 15
This project will be worth 100 points. It will be graded as follows:
*3-D Cell Model with labeled organelles:
!
!
!
40 points possible
*Video describing cell model and organelle functions: !
20 points possible
*Cell Analogy page filled out accurately with correct spelling
20 points possible
and punctuation
*Cell diagram neatly labeled and colored!!

Total:
!
20 points possible
100 points possible

I understand the cell project my child has been assigned and know that it is due on
Friday, November 15.
