Cells Scavenger Hunt
NUCLEUS:
1. What would be a good name for the nucleus?
“The manager” or “Head Honcho” would be good nicknames for the nucleus.
2. What is the function of the nucleus?
The function of the nucleus is to direct all activities of the cell.
3. How many membranes surround the nucleus?
Two membranes surround the nucleus.
NUCLEOLUS:
1. What gets produced in the nucleolus?
Ribosomes get produced in the nucleolus.
CELL MEMBRANE:
1. Where is the cell membrane found?
The cell membrane is structure that forms the outer boundary of the cell.
2. What is the function of the cell membrane?
The function of the cell membrane is to allow certain materials in and out of the cell.
3. What would be a good nickname for the cell membrane?
A good nickname would be “the gate”.
CYTOPLASM:
1. What is the function of the cytoplasm?
The function of the cytoplasm is to hold all the organelles in place to allow them to
carry out the life processes in the cell.
2. Where is the cytoplasm found?
The cytoplasm is a gel-like material that is found inside the cell membrane and outside
the nucleus.
ENDOPLASMIC RETICULUM:
1. What is the function of the endoplasmic reticulum?
The function of the endoplasmic reticulum is to move materials from one part of the
cell to another.
2. What is the endoplasmic reticulum connected to?
The endoplasmic reticulum extends from the nucleus to the cell membrane.
3. What would be a good nickname for the endoplasmic reticulum?
A good nickname would be “the conveyor belt” or “the subway”.
RIBOSOMES:
1. What is produced by the ribosomes?
The ribosomes produce proteins.
MITOCHONDRIA:
1. What is the function of the mitochondria?
The mitochondrion is where energy is released.
2. How many membranes does a mitochondrion have?
Mitochondria have two (2) membranes.
GOLGI BODIES:
1. What does the Golgi Bodies do for the cell?
The Golgi Bodies package and move proteins to the outside of the cell.
2. What would be a good nickname for the Golgi Bodies?
A good nickname would be “post office”. or “FedEx”, or “package department”.
VACHOLES:
1. What does a vacuole do for a cell?
A vacuole is the temporary storage space for the cell.
2. What might be stored in a vacuole?
Vacuoles store water, food, pigments, waste or other materials.
CENTRIOLES:
1. Do plant cells have centrioles?
No, plant cells do not have centrioles.
2. What is the function of the centrioles?
During animal cell division, the centrosome divides and the centrioles
replicate (make new copies).
LYSOSOMES:
1. What is the function of lysosomes?
Lysosomes contain chemicals (enzymes) that digest wastes and worn-out cell parts.
These chemicals also break down food.
CELL WALL:
1. What does the cell wall do for the cell?
The cell wall supports and protects the cell.
2. Where is the cell wall found?
The cell wall is the rigid structure that is found outside of the cell membrane.
3. Do animals have cell walls?
No, animals do not have cell walls.
CHLOROPLASTS:
1. What do chloroplasts do for cells?
Chloroplasts take in sunlight, water and carbon dioxide to make oxygen and sugar (a
form of food). This process is called photosynthesis.
2. Do animals have chloroplasts?
No, animal cells do not have chloroplasts.
3. What pigment is stored inside the chloroplasts?
Chlorophyll is the pigment that is stored inside the chloroplasts.
4. What color is the pigment that is stored inside the chloroplasts?
The color of the chlorophyll (the pigment) is green.
