Organelle= “little
organ”
These are tiny
structures that carry
out tasks inside the
cell.
2 Types of Cells
Prokaryote Cells
“Pro – No” No
Nucleus!
ONLY unicellular.
Ex: Bacteria
Eukaryote Cells
Has a nucleus
and lots of
organelles!
Ex: Animals,
plants, protist,
and fungi
Cell Membrane
Boundary of the cell. Only allows certain
materials to pass in or out.
Cell membrane allows waste to pass out of
cell.
Nucleus
Control center of the
cell
Contains DNA
Usually the easiest
organelle to see under
a microscope
Endoplasmic
Reticulum
A.k.a. “ER”
Connected to nuclear
membrane
Highway of the cell
Rough ER: Bumpy
with ribosomes on the
outside.
Smooth ER: no
ribosomes; it makes
lipids
Ribosome
Makes proteins!
Found attached to
rough ER or floating
free in cytoplasm.
Produced in a part of
the nucleus called the
nucleolus
Golgi Apparatus
Looks like a stack of
pancakes
Stores, modifies and
packages proteins.
Lysosomes
Garbage disposal
of the cell
Contain digestive
enzymes that
break down
wastes
Which organelles do
lysosomes work with?
Mitochondria
“Powerhouse of the
cell”
Makes energy!
Mitochondria breaks
down sugar and turns
it into energy Process called cellular
respiration.
Vacuoles
Storage container for
water, food, enzymes,
wastes, pigments, etc.
Smaller in animal cells
vs plant cells.
Cytoplasm
Jelly-like substance
that holds the
organelles in place.
Chromatin
Located inside the
nucleus and contains
genetic information.
(chromosomes)

Nuclear Membrane
Decides what goes in
and out of the
nucleus.
(Outside of Nucleus)
Nucleolus
Produces Ribosomes
(Inside Nucleus)
