Cell unit vocab
Asexual reproduction—reproduction that uses 1 parent cell to create 2 or more cells that are identical to the
parent.
Budding—a type of asexual repro. That involves a portion of an organism breaking off to form a completely
new organism that is identical. hydra
Fission—the splitting of a cell (organism) into 2 identical cells (2 organisms) bacteria
Spores—the splitting of a cell into many identical cells. Mushroom
Sexual reproduction—reproduction that uses 1 parent cells JOINING to create an entirely new organism
Gamete—a sex cell (sperm or egg)
Egg—the female cell of sexual repro.
Sperm—the male cell of sexual repro.
Zygote—the cell created from the union of the sperm and egg.
Fertilize—the process of joining the sperm to the egg
Meiosis—a cell division that creates sperm or egg
Mitosis—a cell division that creates identical cells (skin making skin)
Nucleus—the control center of a cell
Cell membrane—the outer covering of an animal cell that controls what enters and exits the cell
Cell wall—an extra covering of a PLANT cell that gives more support
Chloroplast—an organelle that captures sunlight to start the process of photosynthesis
Mitochondria—an organelle that turns sugar into energy in the cell
ER—canals within a cell that transports materials in and out of the cell
Vacuole—an organelle that stores materials for a cell (food, waste, etc)
Diffusion—the movement of substances from an area of higher concentration to an area of lower concentration
Extra words to know…
Organelle—a functioning unit within a cell
Organism—a living thing
Cell—smallest living unit.
