Name: _________________________________ Block: ________ Date: _____________ Cell City Poster Project Assigned on Dec 9th and Dec 10th Materials needed: Large poster Pencil, colored pencils, markers Textured items (not required) Textbook or notes for reference (pg.169-182) Making Analogies: Analogies are used to show how things that are very different can have much in common. At first glance, cells don't seem to have much in common with a city or the things of which it is made. Actually, cells and cities have more similarities than you might think. Imagine the cell as a miniature city. The organelles might represent companies, places, or parts of the city, because they have similar functions or jobs. The Task: First you will make an analogy for each of the 12 major cell organelles. Be sure to have a final rough draft before creating your final copy poster. You will explain why you have chosen a particular part of a city for each comparison. Your brief explanations should show that you understand the function of each organelle and how it is like the city part you have chosen. Your analogies and explanations will be listed/ labeled on one half of the poster. The 12 organelles include: Nucleus Nucleolus Mitochondria Endoplasmic Reticulum Ribosomes Chloroplast Cell Wall Cell Membrane Cytoplasm Lysosome Vacuole Golgi body(apparatus) Finally, you will construct a “visual analogy” to show the similarities between cells and cities. This will be the poster, for a grade. You will each construct a display that must include an illustration of a plant cell as one of the following: a city, an amusement park, or a school (not a factory like the template example). Your cell city should take up the second half of your poster. Recommendations: 1. Do not wait until the last minute to complete this project 2. Be creative and use color 3. Add textured pieces to make your city somewhat 3-D on your poster, but be sure it can still hang on a wall and all pieces stay intact, without falling off 4. Ask questions sooner than later 5. You may choose to print your information or handwrite it THIS IS DUE: January 6th (B-day) and 7th (A-day) Cell City/ Amusement Park/ School Simplified Project Template Superdoo Cell Factory (title) label Customization shop/ Golgi Apparatus label label Main office/ Nucleus label walls and roof: Cytoskeleton because of the structural support main office: Nucleus because it is the control center of the cell solar power: Chloroplasts because energy is obtained from the sun factory machine: Ribosomes because the instructions are sent here from the “boss”, the nucleus. Ribosomes (factory machines) in turn send out proteins. customization shop: Golgi Apparatus because finished touches are made here. The Golgi, in the cell, attaches carbohydrates and lipids to proteins. This helps prepare the proteins for their roles. etc. etc. etc. This project will be worth a 100 point task grade. Extra credit for exceeding expectations and originality will be possible.
