Introduction to Cell Parts(Organelles)
(Webquest)
Directions:
1) Go to www.youtube “Bill Nye the Science Guy – Cells”, answer all questions below.
2) go to www.cellsalive.com (ignore all advertisements)
3) in lower left in green color click on “plant/animal” cell under the heading Interactive Cell Model
4) click on the big button that say “Start the Animation”
5) A TV like screen will pop up and choose animal cell first. A picture of an animal cell will pop
up and you can move your mouse all around to see all the parts and then click on the word
below to find out their meanings. Answer all questions below as you explore an animal cell
6) Repeat step 4 but with plant cell. Write it down in your SCIENCE JOURNAL!
*You only have to know(memorize) the cell parts(organelles) that are below and their functions.

5.
What are all living things made up of? __________________
Are these tiny compartments that make up everything alive or not? _______________
Are all the cells the same? Why or why not? ____________________________________
What must be true for us to grow? Explain. ________________________
What do you think is the difference between a single celled organism versus a multicellular
organism?
6. What are genes?
7. How many chromosomes(or DNA) do we get from mom and dad?
8. What tool do you need to see cells? Why?
Animal Cell
1. Draw a picture of an Animal Cell with just these organelles: Nucleus, Cell Membrane,
Mitochondria, Cytoplasm Label the organelles with their names.
2. Make & fill out the below table on the Animal Cell Organelles.
Organelle Name
Nucleus
Cell Membrane
Mitochondria
Cytosol
(Cytoplasm)
Describe the shape of Organelle
Function (Job) of the Organelle
Plant Cell
1. Draw a picture of the plant cell with just these organelles: Nucleus, Cell Wall, Cell Membrane,
Chloroplast, Cytosol(cytoplasm). Label these organelles with their names.
2. Make & fill out the below table on the organelles you drew in the previous picture by clicking
on the organelle name below the picture.
Organelle Name
Describe the shape of Organelle Function (Job) of the Organelle
Nucleus
Cell Wall
Cell Membrane
Chloroplast

Conclusion Questions
1. What organelle in plant and animal cells holds all of the genetic material where our traits come
from? (2 Stars)
2. Compare and contrast plant and animal cells. You may want to use a venn diagram or chart
when answering this question. (1 Star, just answer question)
3. Why do you think plant cells have a cell wall but animal cells don’t? Explain. (3 Stars)
4. How is a cell like a system? Explain using facts from the animation. (3 Stars)
5. Add these words to your glossary pages: cell and organelle. Use the information you learned
here to come up with a definition for these words, check with your group and teacher.
