Cell Analogy Project
Now that you have learned about the organelles in a cell, think of an analogy, comparing the cell and it’s
organelles to something of your choice, as I did below, comparing a cell to a factory. You may look at the
example below but you cannot use it. This project should be on construction paper. The following criteria
should be on the project:
 Make sure you give the function of each part of your analogy, and why it is like the organelle.
 ONCE YOU ARE DONE WITH ALL OF THE ANALOGIES!!!! THEN YOU MAY BEGIN A
PICTURE!
 Make sure you include a labeled picture of what you are comparing your cell to (This is NOT a
picture of a cell, but of a school, restaurant, building, or a car etc.)
 Make sure you list and compare each of the 13 organelles to something in your picture
Please read the checklist below and check off each organelle as you add it in your chart:
Cell Organelles


 Nucleus
Mitochondrion
DNA 
 Cell wall
cell membrane
nuclear membrane
 Chloroplast
ribosomes
cytoplasm

 Golgi body
Endoplasmic reticulum
 vacuole
lysosome
I have included a chart as an example (Do Not copy down this chart & not all of the organelles are listed, your
ideas must be original)
The Cell as a Factory:
Factory Part
Function
Organelle
Central Office
Manages activities, initiates production, controls activities of
factory, just like the nucleus controls the cells activities.
Nucleus
Assembly Line
Assembles raw materials to manufacture items, just like the
ribosome makes proteins that allow chemical processes to take
place.
Ribosome
Packaging & Shipping
Packs products for distribution, similar to a golgi body preparing
materials to be delivered around the cell.
Golgi Bodies
Conveyer Belt
Moves product within the factory, similar to the ER acting like the
roadways of the cell on which materials travel.
Endoplasmic reticulum
Generator
Produces energy for the factory, just like the mitochondria
produces energy for the cell through respiration.
Mitochondrion
Storage area
Stores materials for later use, similar to how a vacuole….
Vacuole
Collection center
Breaks down and recycles used parts, just as a lysosome digests
worn out cell parts & large food molecules.
Lysosome
