What is a Cell? Worksheet
The invention of the microscope made many important discoveries possible. One of these
discoveries was made by Robert Hooke in 1665. Hooke, an English scientist, discovered that living
things are made up of tiny living parts. He called these parts cells.
Living things that can be seen only with a microscope are called microscopic organisms. Some
microscopic organisms, like bacteria and protozoa, have only one cell. Large plants and animals
contain billions of cells.
All of the life functions take place in every cell.
The cell itself is made of certain parts. Plant and animal cells are not exactly alike. But three cell parts
that are found in both plant and animal cells are: the cell membrane, the cytoplasm, and the nucleus.
These are all living materials. Living cell material is called protoplasm.
CELL MEMBRANE – The cell membrane is like a very thing skin covering the cell. It protects the cell
and helps to give it a shape. There are very tiny holes in the cell membrane. Materials enter and
leave the cell through these openings.
CYTOPLASM – The cytoplasm is jelly-like. It fills most of the inside of the cell. Like the cell
membrane, it helps give the cell its shape. Most of the life functions take place here – in the
cytoplasm.
NUCLEUS – The nucleus is inside the cell, surrounded by the cytoplasm. The nucleus is like the boss
of the cell. It controls everything that happens in the cell.
Label the Parts
The picture to the right shows an animal cell.
These are the parts of this cell: nucleus, cell
membrane, cytoplasm.
Find each part of the cell in the picture. Write
its name on the correct line in the picture.
Name: ____________________________________

What Do the Pictures Show?
Look at each picture. Then answer the questions.
1. Name a cell part that has tiny holes in it.
_______________________________________
2. What needed materials enter through the holes?
_______________________________________
3. What unwanted materials leave through the holes?
_______________________________________
4. Which is larger, a cell or an atom?
________________________________
5. Which is alive, a cell or an atom?
________________________________
Most cells have only one nucleus. Muscle cells have more than one
nucleus.
6. Is this a muscle cell?
______________________________________________
7. How do you know?
______________________________________________
______________________________________________
A bird’s egg is a single cell. A bird’s egg has a hard shell that covers
the membrane.
8. Do you need a microscope to see this cell?
______________________________________________
9. What extra part does a bird’s egg have?
______________________________________________

True of False
Write T on the line next the number if the sentence is true. Write F is the sentence is false.
1. ________
A rock has cells.
2. ________
Most of the cell is the nucleus
3. ________
Only the nucleus of the cell is its protoplasm
4. ________
The cell membrane has holes
5. ________
Most cells are microscopic in size
6. ________
Plant cells and animal cells are exactly alike
7. ________
A cell must have a nucleus to live
8. ________
Every cell has a cytoplasm
9. ________
Most of the life functions take place in the nucleus
10. ________
A cell produces waste products
Matching
Match the two lists. Write the correct letter on the line next to each number.
1. ________
waste products
(a)
the boss of the cell
2. ________
atoms
(b)
have more than one nucleus
3. ________
nucleus
(c)
go out through the cell membrane
4. ________
muscle cells
(d)
not living
