CELLS GLOSSARY
Cell - building block of life
Cell division – mitosis, a cell divides into two new cells
Chloroplast - plant cell organelle, contains chlorophyll, uses Sun’s energy to
convert CO2 & H20 into sugar & oxygen (photosynthesis)
Connective tissue - tissue that supports & connects parts of the body (blood,
fat, cartilage, tendons, bone)
Cytoplasm - jelly-like material that fills the cell & surrounds the organelles;
contains nutrients the cell needs to survive
Diffusion - movement of particles from an area of higher concentration to an
area of lower concentration
Digestive system - made up of the mouth, salivary glands, esophagus,
stomach, liver, gall bladder, pancreas & intestines
Endocrine system - made up of several glands that produce hormones
Endoplasmic reticulum - folded organelle in a cell that makes proteins
Epithelial tissue - covering the body & internal organs; lines the inside of some
organs (small intestine)
Excretory system - made of kidneys, ureters, bladder & urethra; filters blood &
removes liquid waste & extra H20
Impermeable - that cannot be passed through (by air or water, for example)
Integumentary system - made up of skin hair, nails & sweat glands.
Lymphatic system - responsible for destroying & removing invading organisms
& abnormal cells
Microorganism - (e.g. bacteria, amoebas, algae & fungi)
Nervous system - made up of brain, spinal cord & nerves
Nucleus - large organelle, controls all cell activities (growth, repair &
reproduction)
1
Organelle - small structure inside a cell, performs specific function to meet cell’s
basic needs (survive & reproduce)
Osmosis - diffusion in which a fluid (usually H2O) moves through a selectively
permeable membrane
Permeable - that can be easily permeated or penetrated (by air of water, for
example)
Respiratory system - (nose, trachea, lungs, throat, larynx & bronchi) allows
oxygen to enter the body & waste CO2 to exit
Skeletal system - made up of bones & cartilage; provides support for
movement, attachment points for tissues
Tissue - group of specialized cells in an organism that have similar structure &
function
Tumor - mass of cells that continually, reproduce but are otherwise nonfunctional
Vacuole - large, sac-like organelle that stores excess food, waste & other
substances required by the cell
