CELL SCAVENGER HUNT!!
You have found the match for the NUCLEUS of a
cell!
The nucleus is a special operation center that
controls most of the cell’s activities. This center
also stores the DNA, which is the cell’s important
genetic information.
The office is the control center of a school. The
key figures that help direct this control are the
administrators and secretaries in the office.
They are like the DNA.

CELL SCAVENGER HUNT!!
You have found the match for the VACUOLE of a
cell!
The vacuole is a special storage chamber in the
cell. In the storage chamber, things like food,
water, and wastes are stored. In plant cells, the
vacuole can get so large that it may take up over
90% of the cell’s volume.
The storage room is similar in function to the
vacuole. This is where the department stores
important equipment for later use. This is also a
place where the department can store toxic
wastes for later disposal.

You have found the match for the
MITOCHONDRIA of a cell!
The mitochondria are organelles that specialize
in making energy for the cell. It is often
referred to as the “powerhouse of the cell”. The
mitochondria take food particles and convert the
food energy into ATP. ATP is a form of energy
that cells can ultimately use.
The cafeteria dining area is like the
mitochondria. In the dining area, people of the
school take in food and convert it into energy for
other uses. The mitochondria is an organelle that
allows an area for conversion of food into other
usable fuel for the cell.

You have found the match for the
CHLOROPLAST of a cell!
The chloroplast is the part of a plant cell that
allows it to make food. This is what makes plants
green. The chloroplast takes sun energy and can
convert it into a useable form of food. This form
of food is glucose.
The kitchen of the foods room is similar to the
chloroplast of a cell. The kitchen is a place
where food is made and prepared for
consumption. The chloroplast is a place where
food for the cell is made.

You have found the match for the LYSOSOME of
a cell!
The lysosome is a small organelle that is for
digestion of materials in the cell. The destroy
invaders of the cell by digesting them away.
They also destroy and dispose of used organelles
that do not work anymore.
The trash can acts as a comparison to the
lysosome. Lysosomes are disposal agents of the
cells, that ultimately help remove pieces of
unnecessary material from a cell. Trash cans are
also disposal areas for a school. Items are placed
in them and then eventually destroyed and
removed from the school.

You have found the match for the
CYTOSKELETON of a cell!
The cytoskeleton is the strands of protein that
help the cell maintain its shape and size. Without
the cytoskeleton, the cell might be more
collapsed. The proteins of the cytoskeleton help
keep the cell firm and full.
The support beams of the school building act like
the cytoskeleton. These keep the school
structure standing as it is. Without these
beams, the ceiling would fall in and the structure
of the school would be destroyed.

CELL SCAVENGER HUNT!!
You have found the match for the DNA of a cell!
The DNA of the cell is the genetic blueprint of
how the entire cell and organism is made. This
gives the directions on where materials should be
in the cell. It also tells you how things are run in
the cell and what the end products should look
like.
The DNA is like the secretaries of the school.
If anyone has all the information on how the
school is to be run, it is the secretaries! They
are the greatest storehouse of information on
school procedures and directions. They are also
inside the office (the nucleus).

CELL SCAVENGER HUNT!!
You have found the match for the
ENDOPLASMIC RETICULUM (ER) of a cell!
The ER is a long system of tubes and sacs. It
acts as a “highway” for the cell. Materials made
or processed in one part of the cell are
transported to new parts of the cell on the ER.
The school hallways act like the ER. These are
the parts of the school that help connect
different parts of the school to each other.
They “transport” students from class to class
(sometimes!).

You have found the match for the CELL
MEMBRANE of a cell!
The cell membrane is an organelle that
selectively allows certain molecules in and out of
the cell. It acts as a barrier for some items. It
also acts as a means to push other items into the
cell.
The front check-in desk acts like the cell
membrane. The people who work at the check-in
desk allow certain people in and out of the school.
They are selective in who can be within the cell,
much as the cell membrane is selective as to
which molecules can be in the cell..
CODE FOR CELL MEMBRANE:

CELL SCAVENGER HUNT!!
You have found the match for the CELL WALL of
a cell!
The cell wall is an organelle only found in plant
cells. It is what gives the plant cell such a rigid
and definite shape. It protects the cell from
outside influences. It can also allow certain
items in and out of the cell.
The school doors and walls are like the cell wall.
The walls give the school its definite shape.
They also protect the school from outside
elements. Lastly, the doors allow passage of
some items in and out of the school.
CODE FOR CELL WALL:

CELL SCAVENGER HUNT!!
You have found the match for the RIBOSOME of
a cell!
The ribosome is an organelle that allows proteins
to be assembled. It acts like a small workbench
for the cell to make proteins on. Proteins are
vitally important to making the whole human
body. So, these are the mini-factories that put
the pieces together into something useable.
The shop acts like the ribosome of the school. In
shop, you assemble pieces together to make
larger, functioning items. The ribosome is also an
assembly location in the cell.
CODE FOR RIBOSOME:

CELL SCAVENGER HUNT!!
You have found the match for the GOLGI
APPARATUS of a cell!
The golgi apparatus is a packaging and
distribution center for the cell. If items need to
be modified and shipped out to other portions of
the cell, the golgi deals with it. It accepts newly
made compounds, packages them up, and then
sends them out to places within the cell or out of
the cell. It is like the post office of the cell.
The copy center is similar in function to the golgi.
The copy center receives all copy requests for
the Hopkins School District. Here, the copy
center modifies them and packages the materials
up. Ultimately, the items then get shipped back
out to other parts of the district.
