Cells Answers 1. List the names of the parts of an animal cell Nucleus, cytoplasm, cell membrane, mitochondria, ribsomes 2. List the names of the parts of a plant cell Nucleus, cell wall, cytoplasm, cell membrane, chloroplasts, vacuole, mitochondria, ribosomes 3. What does the nucleus do? Controls the activities of the cell. Contains the genetic information 4. What does a cell membrane do? Controls the passage of substances in and out of the cell 5. What does the cytoplasm do? A liquid gel in which most of the chemical reactions take place eg respiration 6. What does a vacuole do? Filled with cell sap and keeps the cell rigid to support the plant 7. What does a cell wall do? Made of cellulose which strengthens the cell and gives it support 8. What does mitochondria do? Where oxygen is used and most of energy is released 9. What do ribosomes do? Make proteins 10. What do chloroplasts do? Contain chlorophyll which absorbs light to make food by photosynthesis 11. What is a specialised cell? Cells that are adapted to carry out specific jobs 12. What is the job of a sperm cell and how is it adapted to do it? To fertilise an egg. Adaptations: tail to swim; full of mitochondria which provide energy for tail to work; large nucleus containing the genes to pass on 13. What is the job of a root hair cell and how is it adapted to do it? To absorb water. Adaptations: large surface area to move water into cell; large vacuole which affects movement of water from soil 14. List 3 ways in which substances move in and out of cells Diffusion, osmosis, active transport 15. What is diffusion and how can the rate of diffusion be increased? Net movement of particles from area of high concentration to area of low concentration. Rate increased by having big difference in concentration between 2 areas 16. What is osmosis? Movement of water from high water concentration to a low water concentration through a partially permeable membrane 17. What is a partially permeable membrane? Membrane which only lets some type of particles through
