School-Cell Analogy
In order for our school to run smoothly, there are many different parts that work
together to carry out different tasks & functions. They same thing happens with all of
the organelles in the cell; they work together to carry out the task of the cell. Your job is
to make a comparison of the parts of the cell to parts of the school in order to help you
remember the roles of various cell organelles.
A. Solar Powered Calculators – Use the sun’s energy to produce power for the
calculator.
B. School Walls – Controls who comes in and goes out of the school.
C. Brick Outside Wall- Rigid outer structure that helps the school keep its shape.
D. Paper Shredder – Breaks down larger paper into small strips of paper
E. Lockers – Stores needed materials
F. Main Office– Controls the daily functions of the school
G. Generator – Supplies energy for the school
H. Hallways – Allow for students to move between classrooms
I. Filing Cabinets in Main Office– Contain student information
J. Cafeteria – Ribs are for lunch today, and ribs contain a lot of protein.
Cell Organelle Word Bank:
Vacuole
Nucleus
Endoplasmic Reticulum
Chromosomes
Cell Wall
Ribosome
Lysosomes
Cell Membrane
Mitochondria
Chloroplast
Directions:
1. Use your text book pages 34-36, your Plant and Animal Cell
Diagrams and Cell Organelle Word Bank with definitions to
complete the chart on the next page.
2. Choose 3 parts of a cell and 3 matching parts of your school
building. Write a paragraph that explains the comparisons.
Example Sentence: I have compared my school to a cell. One
part of the school that is very important is the main office. The
main office controls the daily functions of the school and is like
the nucleus of a cell because the nucleus controls all of the
functions of a cell.

Writing in Science:
Choose 3 parts of a cell and 3 matching parts of your school building. Write
a paragraph that explains the comparisons. Use loose-paper if needed.
Example Sentence: I have compared my school to a cell. One part of the
school that is very important is the main office. The main office controls
the daily functions of the school and is like the nucleus of a cell because
the nucleus controls all of the functions of a cell.
