Concluding the lesson the students will: › Review procedures learned and practice two new ones. › Identify the phases of the process of Mitosis. › Explain what happens in each phase Raise hand to ask to move around the room Do not ask permission to stand up in the middle of a discussion, unless is an emergency. Make good decisions, do not interrupt discussion and lecture time Sharpen pencils during individual time or immediately you arrive; get tissues at your discretion Dispose of garbage at the end of the class. Be sure your papers are properly labeled with the name, class and date. Pass the papers across the row to your left. If / When you receive a paper, place yours on top and continue passing the stack. The first person in the row will neatly organize the papers and hand them to me. All papers are turned into the tray in the folders labeled for your class unless you are given different instructions. All work is due when called for. Work not turned at this time will be late and will not receive full credit. Check the AGENDA to see if a paper is due at the beginning of class. There are two trays for each group Hand in homework assignments to the tray marked HW . Hand in class work assignment to the tray marked CLASS WORK . Sample Heading: Name: Juan Perez Group: month/day/year student # ______ Mrs. Perez “HOMEWORK or LABORATORY TITLE” ___________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________ Big Idea: Mitosis is the process in which the nucleus divides to form two new nuclei and two cells with identical DNA. 6 6 How do little elephants grow up to be BIG elephants? Mitosis begins after fertilization 1 cell becomes 2 cells, becomes 4 cells…becomes TRILLIONS Why do cells make more cells? Animated Mitosis Cycle http://www.cellsalive.com/mitosis.htm • Interphase • Prophase • Metaphase • Anaphase • Telophase & Cytokinesis Chromosomes are copied (# doubles) • Chromosomes appear as threadlike coils (chromatin) at the start, but each chromosome and its copy(sister chromosome) change to sister chromatids at end of this phase • Nucleus CELL MEMBRANE Cytoplasm Animal Cell Plant Cell Photographs from: http://www.bioweb.uncc.edu/biol1110/Stages.htm • • • Mitosis begins (cell begins to divide) Centrioles (or poles) appear and begin to move to opposite end of the cell. Spindle fibers form between the poles. Centrioles Sister chromatids Spindle fibers Animal Cell Plant Cell Spindle fibers Centrioles Photographs from: http://www.bioweb.uncc.edu/biol1110/Stages.htm • Chromatids (or pairs of chromosomes) attach to the spindle fibers. Chromosomes appear as chromatin (threads rather than rods). Mitosis ends.
