Cells and Tissues Test
1.
What is a cell ?
The smallest structural and functional unit of an organism (Basic unit of which an
organisms are made) , which is typically microscopic and consists of cytoplasm and
a nucleus enclosed in a membrane.
2.
Mention 5 different types of specialised cells.
Xylem , Palisade, Root hair, Muscle, Nerve, Egg, Sperm, Red, White
3.
What are the main organelles of cells. (common for both animal and
plant cell)
Cell membrane, Cytoplasm, Nucleus, Mitochondrion, Golgi Body,
Ribosome(Not important to study but good to know)
4.
What is the function of the :
Nucleus : It controls the various processes which go inside the cell. Nucleus
contains chromosomes which determine the characteristic of an organism.
Mitochondria: are described as the powerhouse of the cell. They release energy
for the cell.
Cell wall: is a rubbery material which helps to make the plant tough and rigid.
Is made up of cellulose.
Cell membrane: is very delicate. It holds the cell together and plays an
important in controlling what passes in and out of it.
Cytoplasm: produces energy, makes things and stores food. Chemical reactions
occur in it and these reactions make up metabolism.
Ribosomes: play an important part in the production of Proteins.
Chloroplast: they contain the green pigment chlorophyll which is used for
photosynthesis.
Vacuole: filled with watery fluid called cell sap. It maintains the shape of cell.
5.
In what way does the red blood cells differ from most other animal cells.
It has a red pigment which carries oxygen and has a large surface area.
6.
How does a cell membrane differ from a cell wall ?
The cell membrane is semi-permeable while the cell wall is fully permeable.
7.
What does specialisation of cells mean ?
Specialised cell means different cells performing different functions
8. Mention 2 functions of specialised cells as mentioned in question 2.
9.
Draw a :
nerve cell , sperm cell ,
bacteria cell , muscle cell ,
onion cell (epidermis).
