Aristotle once said, “The whole is more than the sum of its parts.” What Aristotle meant
was, the bigger idea of something means more than an individual thing that makes up the
“something.” Like a car is more than the leather seats that are inside of it, or an apple pie is
more than the tin that holds the pie. Parts of a something are important. However, they aren’t
as important as when the parts work together to make something larger happen. For example,
how the gears and springs of a clock, help us to tell time but they (the gears/springs) don’t really
matter to the person who is trying to tell time, the clock. Thus, whole is greater than the sum
of its parts, just like a cell is greater than the parts of a cell, and just like how a City is greater
than is parts such as the City Limits, the road system, warehouse, Power Company, and even
City Hall.
In the same way that a Cell has parts that make up the cell, a City has parts that make up
what it is; but this doesn’t mean each part is as important as the “larger structure.” A cell has
parts such as the __________________, __________________, __________________,
________________________, and___________________________. Each has a job, but they
aren’t as important as what cells do. Cells are the basic building blocks of life. This means that
cells make up all living things. They are what make a living thing, alive! This is very important.
Similarly, a City is more important than the parts such as the City Limits, the road system,
warehouse, Power Company, and City Hall. Each has a role. City Limits control what goes in and
out of the city, just like the __________________. Furthermore, road systems allow for
movement throughout the city just like the _______________________ in a cell. Moreover, a
warehouse stores material needed by the city the same way the _____________________
stores energy for a cell. Additionally, a Power Company within a city produces energy for the city
to use every day. This is similar to how the ________________________ produces energy for
the cell to use. Finally a City Hall’s job within the city is to control all the activities of the city; it’s
like a brain of the city. This is exactly like a _____________________________ inside of a cell.
As you can see each part has a job. The jobs of the parts are important but they aren’t as
important as the City or Cell. The city or cell is the basic building block for the state or life. They
are so much more important because they make up what life is.
In conclusion, as Aristotle once rightly said, “The whole is more than the sum of its
parts.” A cell’s parts a not as important as the cell itself. The cell makes life happen.
Subsequently, a City is more important than the parts of a city, because the city allows for
people to have a place to live, a place to build a community, and a place to have a family. Life is
more than the small things in it. It is the bigger structures, bigger ideas, and bigger things like
clocks, cars, apple pie, a city, and a cell. So, go out and find the “bigger structures,” and “don’t
sweat the small stuff,” it doesn’t matter anyway.
