CellStructure&Function
Cytosol
• Organisms are composed of cells
• Cells contain organelles which are
specialized structures that carry out
important processes in the cell
• http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1IqsE8CVTms
Plasma Membrane
• Surrounds the cell
OrganellesandTheir
Functions
Golgi Apparatus
• Packages proteins in the cell
Mitochondria
• power house of the cell
• main site of cellular respiration
Ribosome
• non-membranous organelles that make proteins
Lysosome
• Breaks Waste down

Cytosol
• within the membrane
• semi-fluid substance in which organelles are found
Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum
• network of membranous sacs
• site of lipid and steroid synthesis
• most chemical reactions take place here
• Contains ribosomes (rough endoplasmic reticulum)
Nucleus
• control center of the cell and dictates what
all of the other organelles do
• stores the DNA and holds all genetic
information
The Plant Cell
• has chloroplasts
• has a central vacuole
• has a cell wall which makes the cell rigid
What looks different?

Chloroplasts
Central Vacuole
• photosynthetic organelle
• storage and breakdown of wastes
• converts energy from sunlight into chemical energy stored in sugar
molecules
• enlargement of vacuole is a major mechanism of plant growth
NoCellDivision,Noyou
Cell Wall
• outer layer that maintains the cells shape and protects cell
from damage
• made of cellulose
• The cell theory:
• All living things are composed of cells
• Cells are the basic units of structure and
function of living things
• All cells are produced from other cells

CellDivision
• The reproduction of organisms is not possible without cell
division
• You were once one single cell
The Cell Cycle
• Process by which the parent cell grows, duplicates itself, and
divides to produce new daughter cells, usually two.
Mitosis
• is the division of cells that produces daughter cells that
have the same number of chromosomes as the parent cell.
Hence, it occurs when your body is growing and you
need to replace those worn out cells
3 Major phases:
1. Interphase- performs normal cell functions
2. Mitosis- the nucleus divides to produce an exact copy of itself
3. Cytokinesis- rest of the cell contents divide to produce two
separate daughter cells
CellDivisionSteps
• Interphase comes first where the cell grows and DNA replicates as it begins to prepare for cell division. MitosisVideo
• http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C6hn3sA0ip0
• Mitosis comes next with the following phases:
• Prophase, metaphase, anaphase, telophase
• IPMAT: easy acronym for remembering cell division • What is involved in each stage????
• Lets figure it out?
