Do Now
1. Cells
2. Eukaryotes
3. Eukaryotic, since they have a nucleus. EU = You!
4. Animal cells can be round (or another shape),
while plant cells are generally square
5. Mitochondria is a cell organelle that is the
“powerhouse” of the cell and provides energy
PLANT CELL
ORGANELLES
SWBAT analyze the processes carried out by the
organelles in plant cells
On Monday, we discussed…
On Tuesday, we
discussed…
Yesterday, we discussed…
WRITE-PAIR-SHARE
 List the organelles you learned yesterday that
appear in animal cells. Then, circle the ones you
think also appear in plant cells.
Organelles
 Organelles that are in both plant and animal cells:

Nucleus
Nuclear membrane
Cytoplasm
Cell/plasma membrane
Mitochondria

Vacuoles
Plant Cell Organelles
Plant Cells.
 Cellulose Cell Wall: a rigid
wall structure around the
cell that gives the cell a
rectangular and structural
support
Plant Cells.
 Large Central Vacuole: a
large “tank” in the middle of
the cell that holds water for
long periods of time.
 WRITE-PAIR-SHARE:
Animal cells have vacuoles
too, but much smaller. What
do you think led to this
difference?
Plant Cells.
 Chloroplasts: small organelles
in each cell that contain
chlorophyll responsible for
making energy during
photosynthesis
WRITE-PAIR-SHARE
 So, plant cells have mostly the same organelles as
animal cells, but also have a few extra organelles (as
well as a much, much larger vacuole). Why do you
think plant cells need more organelles?
PLANT CELLS
 Plant cells are more
complicated and have
more organelles than
animal cells, since plants
have to make their own
food (photosynthesis)
instead of eating it (like
animals)
Cell Rap again!

3 Important Facts
 Complete the bottom box on your notes page to
sum up what you think were the most important
parts of today’s lesson
Partner Practice
 Complete the sheet labeled “Partner Practice” with
your partner at a noise level of 1
Broken Heart
 Today, you are going to become independent, literally
 You are playing the role of a plant cell who has decided
to breakup with your partner, an animal cell
 You will be writing an informal letter
 Use the knowledge of informal writing that you are
learning in ELA
 Use only scientific knowledge we’ve covered
 No “I’m breaking up with you because you never call!” or
“I don’t like the way you were flirting with the prokaryotic
cell!”
Break Up Letter: An
Example
Dear Prokaryotic Cell,
I know we had a lot of similarities. We both are
cells, which is the basic building block of living things. But
besides that, we are just too different. I am make up
multicellular organisms, and you are just a lonely, single
cell. I am complicated and made up of many organelles,
like a nucleus, mitochondria, and a cell membrane. You, on
the other hand, are just TOO BASIC! Finally, I have a
nucleus, and you don’t! Because of these differences I am
sorry to tell you that I think we need to break up. I hope
you understand.
Best, Eukaryotic Cell
