Inexpensive Cell Migration Inquiry Lab using Danio rerio – Kate M. Cooper
Zebrafish Cell Migration
• How do cells move within the body?
White blood cells have to migrate to hunt down
invading bacteria
• Largest fraction of your white blood cells are
neutrophils
• “Migration” means a cell will move from one
place to another under its own power
• Neutrophil chasing S. aureas movie
Neutrophils will also migrate in response to
a wound
• Zebrafish embryo neutrophil migration movie

Figure from a student lab report.
This system can be used to investigate
molecules important for directional
cell migration
Discussion Question:
What are some of the structures in the cell that
might be necessary for directional cell migration?
Brainstorm a list with your group.
Hint: think about how the cell would need to recognize a
signal to move and how it might physically move.
Cytoskeleton
• Discussion question: What are the three main
components of the cell cytoskeleton? What
are similarities and differences between their
structures?

Goal in lab next week:
• Design and test a hypothesis about the
cytoskeleton and neutrophil migration in Danio
rerio.
• Inhibitors to cytoskeletal components and 3-day-old
zebrafish embryos will be provided.
• Remember you will be doing a full write up (title,
abstract, introduction, methods, results, discussion)
for this lab, therefore, make sure you have at least
two or three journal articles you’ve found ahead of
time that you might use in your introduction or
discussion section.
