Mitosis Foldable Use this sheet and your notes to complete the foldable. Phase One: On the front of the flap: o Use the yellow paper to draw a picture of what is happening in this phase and label the parts (you should have: nuclear membrane, cell membrane, nucleolus, chromatin, centrioles and cytoplasm o On the inside of the flap write the name of the phase, interphase o On the white paper write what is happening during this phase: During interphase the cell grows, makes a copy of its DNA and prepares to divide into 2 new cells Animal cells make a copy of the centrioles, plant cells do not Phase Two: Phase Three: Phase Four: On front of flap: o Draw picture of what is happening and label with the following: sister chromatids, centromere, nuclear membrane disappearing, spindle fibers and centrioles o On inside of flap write name of phase, prophase o On white paper write what is happening: Spindle fibers begin to form Chromosomes become visible Nuclear membrane/envelope breaks down The centrioles move to opposite sides of cell On front of flap o Draw picture of what is happening and label with the following: spindle fibers, centrioles, chromatids, centromeres o On inside of flap write name of phase, metaphase o On white paper write what is happening during metaphase: Each chromosome/chromatid attaches to the spindle fiber in the middle of the cell by the centromere On front of flap o Draw picture of what is happening and label with the following: spindle fibers, centrioles, chromatids, centromeres o On inside of flap write name of phase, anaphase o On white paper write about what is happening during anaphase: The centromeres split and pull the chromosomes apart The spindle fibers pull the chromosomes to opposite ends of the cell The chromatids are called chromosomes after they separate Phase Five: On front of flap o Draw picture of what is happening and label with the following: chromatin, 2 new nuclei, cell pinched in middle o On inside of flap write name of phase, telophase o On white paper write what is happening during telophase: The spindle fibers disappear Chromosomes start to uncoil Two new nuclei form Cell membrane starts to pinch inward to create 2 new cells Final stage of mitosis On front of flap o Draw picture of what is happening and label with the following: 2 daughter cells, nuclear membrane, chromatin, nucleus for each cell o On inside of flap write name of phase, cytokinesis o On white paper write what is happening during cytokinesis: Cytokinesis starts at about the same time as telophase Cytoplasm divides during cytokinesis When complete 2 daughter cells have same number of chromosomes as parent cell Since the rigid cell wall on plant can’t pinch in like the cell membrane it creates a cell plate across middle of cell. Cell membranes are then created and cell walls form last The 2 new cells inter interphase and begin the cycle again Phase Six:
