Transcript
Transcribe and Translate a Gene
Name:__________________
Date:_______
Standard(s):

BI4. a. Students know the general pathway by which ribosomes synthesize proteins,
using tRNAs to translate genetic information in mRNA.
 BI5. a. Students know the general structures and functions of DNA, RNA, and protein.
.Objectives: SWBAT…
 Explain the genetic factors that influence the way we look.
 Recognize that DNA contains the genetic information that determines the way we look.
 Explain and describe how genetic information is passed from parents to offspring.
 Predict the physical characteristics of an organism based on its genetic make up.
Directions:
1. Open the following link:
http://learn.genetics.utah.edu/content/begin/dna/transcribe/
2. Complete the transcription of the DNA strand by matching the correct base pairs
(A-U, C-G, (T-A-from DNA to RNA). Press enter then use the keyboard to select
the correct base pair letter.
3. Capture a screenshot of your RNA molecule and paste it in the table below.
Table 1. Screenshot of Completed RNA Molecule
4. Locate the AUG sequence on the RNA strand. Click on the AUG sequence on the
RNA strand to start the translation process.
5. Click and drag the corresponding amino acid from the Universal Genetic Code
chart for each RNA triplet (set of three letters).
6. Capture a screenshot of your completed translated protein and paste in the table
below.

Follow-up Questions:
 Answer the questions below in complete sentences.
 You may use the resources below to help with this.

Questions:
1.) What is produced during transcription?
2.) Explain the base-pairing rules for DNA and RNA?
3.) How is RNA used to “create” a protein?
