A Cell in a Bag Project
A cell is really like a plastic bag with some interesting “stuff” inside of it. The
“stuff” in the bag also works like the inside of a car to be sure that the cell is able
survive. This project will help you to visualize the cell as a 3D structure with the
machinery necessary to sustain life.
Procedure:
1. Fill a plastic zipper bag with objects to represent the cell organelles. You
may make either a plant or animal cell. You should include the following
organelles (depending on the cell type you choose): cell wall, cell
membrane, nucleus, ribosome, endoplasmic reticulum,
mitochondria, vacuole, lysosome, Golgi body, and chloroplast. (Your
bag may count as one of the organelles. Guess which one!)
2. Draw a diagram of your cell. Your diagram must be at least ½ page, in
color, and must show all objects used to represent the organelles in the
cell, You must also include a legend that describes which objects
represent each of the organelles.
3. Create a chart that compares the cell organelle to a part of a car.
Example:
Cell Organelle
Part of Car
How does it compare
Nucleus
Computer
Controls the functions
of the cell the same as
a computer controls the
functions of the car
