A Tour of the Cell
Chapter 6 : (pages 110-131)
Each of your cells is a miniature marvel. Consider taking a complex machine with millions of parte –
say a jumbo jet – and shrinking it to microscopic size while keeping everything in working order. It
would still seem simple compared to a living cell. Everything you do, every action and every thought,
reflects processes occurring at the cellular level. IN this chapter, you will tour cells to explore cell
structures and how they function.
Learning Targets:
Explain the main ideas of the cell theory.
Describe how microscopes aid the study of cells.
Describe and distinguish between prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells.
Compare and contrast animal cells and plant cells.
Describe the structure of cellular membranes
Describe how passive transport occurs.
Relate osmosis to solute concentration.
Explain how active transport differs from passive transport.
Describe how large molecules move across a membrane.
Identify the cell organelles and describe their functions
