Extra Credit Assignment
You are to demonstrate and “cell-a-brate” your mastery of cell biology by completing a
project. Your may choose one from the following listed. Please choose something that compliments
your learning style or one of your multiple intelligences that you are strong in so you can be
successful and have fun.
You will present you project on an animal cell to your class. You are expected to show that
you know all the major organelles and their location in a typical Eukaryotic cell. Mrs McGuire will
evaluate you based on your presentation and the quality and accuracy of your model.
Each model must include ALL of the following organelles:
Lysosomes
Vacuoles
Nucleolus
Cell Membrane
Cytoplasm
Ribosomes
Endoplasmic Reticulum
Nucleus
Golgi Complex
Mitochondria
Grades will be generally be based on the following:
DUE: February 22, 2010

Name, Date, and Period on the project.

All major organelles correctly labeled with the correct structure.

Good description of the function of the each organelle.

Give an analogy for all the organelles you are presenting.

You can use any materials as long as they are not poisonous or noxious (stinky) and disposable.

Information is well organized-title, clearly labeled, good spacing, use of underlining, bold, etc.

Neatness-penmanship, straight level writing, spelling…are important.

Creative/Colorful/Interesting/Originality will always be a positive trait to look for while grading.
Menu of Project Choices:
Most projects must be done individually but some
like a video can include two people as long as
both appear in the video equally.
#1 Make a Poster





Draw an animal with all the major organelles with markers on paper.
Label all the major organelles (parts) of the cell.
Describe the function of the organelles you are presenting.
Give an analogy for all the organelles you are presenting. Draw the analogy and describe it.
Explain your analogy to your class.
#2 Create a 3-D cell model It can be out of any nonfood material like paper Mache, styrene, clay,
cardboard, etc….
#3 Author a PowerPoint slide show on cell biology. It must have at least 10 slides but no more
than 14 slides.
#4 Compose a children’s book or mini-textbook on cell biology. It can be hand drawn or
images/clip art may be used. Include a cover and a title page. Must be approximately 12 pages.
#5 Create an educational board game that players can explore and learn about cells.
#6 Create a video that demonstrates knowledge of cells. For example film a skit. Limit to 5 minutes.
#7 Write and perform a song about cells. Must include information about most organelles.
#8 Create a ride at an amusement park that would simulate traveling through a cell as though the
riders were microscopic in size. Describe the organelles as you find them during the trip.
#9 Write a short story about some fantasy adventure through a cell (i.e. “Magic School Bus”) or
how a cell is used by a mad scientist etc. It must be illustrated. No more than 5 pages.
#10 Teach a lesson on a cell biology topic. To find a topic search your book or the internet. Must
a lesson with visual aides, something for the students to do (notes ,worksheet, etc.) and last no
longer than seven minutes.
#11 Making of the incredible edible? cell model:
 Using edible materials build a model of a plant or animal cell. Choose food that accurately
represents the structure of each organelle- for example shape and size (scale) is similar to the
real organelles.
 Fill in the chart to indicate which material you used to represent each of the structures.
 Please bring the cell project on/in a disposable container that you do not need returned.

SAMPLE: For the Edible Cell Model fill in the cell organelle chart below:
ITEM
CELL PART
gelatin or
corn syrup
Cytoplasm
2 zip-lock
plastic bags
Cell
Membrane
Golgi
Body/Complex
Nucleus
Mitochondria
Lysosomes
Ribosomes
Endoplasmic
Recticulum
Vacuoles
& Vesicles
FUNCTION
Supports all organelles and it is where
chemical reactions take place; made up of a
jelly-like substance.
It is the barrier of between the inside of the cell
and its environment. It has protein channels to
allow certain materials in and out of the cell.
White out the
examples if you
want to use other
materials.

Rubric for Oral Presentations
 The topic of the presentation meets the requirements of the assignment. The correct
organelles are being taught. Form and function are shown and discussed.

The presentation appears to be well researched and presenter is adequately rehearsed.

The presenter delivers ideas in a clear and simple manner, without much reliance on notes.

The presentation is organized and is logical (makes sense).

Presentation is clear: the presenter speaks loudly and clearly enough to be heard, maintains
eye contact with the audience.
