Cell Cycle Regulation & Cancer Web Quest: Activity
Introduction:
Cells divide in order for an organism to grow, develop and repair itself. Cells grow and divide in
a specific fashion. When cells do not divide the way they are supposed to cancer can develop. In
this activity, you will investigate the steps involved in the cell cycle, regulation of the cell cycle,
factors that cause mutations in DNA that is used to make the proteins involved cell cycle
regulation, and how cancer spreads.
Cell Cycle

1. What is the cell cycle and what are the four steps in the cell cycle?
2. What is interphase and what occurs during this step in the cell cycle?
3. What happens during Gap 1 (G1) of the cell cycle?
4. What happens during S phase of the cell cycle?
5. What happens during Gap 2 (G2) of the cell cycle?
6. What happens during M phase (mitosis) of the cell cycle?
7. What are checkpoints and why are they important in the cell cycle?

1. What is cdK and how does it affect the cell cycle?
2. What is MPF and how does it affect the cell cycle?
3. What is p53 and how does it affect the cell cycle?
4. What is p27 and how does it affect the cell cycle?
5. Which proteins trigger progression through the cell cycle?
6. Which proteins block progression through the cell cycle?
7. What is cancer?
