FLASH CARD REVIEW: Cell Membrane Transport What is the Cell Membrane composed of? • Phospholipid Bilayer • Proteins embedded What is the Function of the Cell Membrane? • Control movement in + out of cell • Protection Where is the Cell Membrane on Cells? •The outer covering! What is a Cell Wall in Plants composed of? •Cellulose What is the Function of the Cell Wall? • Extra Structure • Extra Protection Where is the Cell Wall on Cells? • The very outside! • Outside & Around the Cell Membrane! What types of organisms have Cells Walls? • Plants • Some Bacteria • Fungi What is Diffusion? • The movement of particles (across a concentration gradient) from an area of HIGH to LOW concentration! What is Osmosis? • The movement of water particles (across a concentration gradient) from an area of HIGH water (low solute) concentration, to an area of LOW water (high solute) concentration. During Diffusion & Osmosis, will particles ALL move to ONE side? • No. • Particles want to be evenly spread out. • Want to reach equilibrium. Some of your cells are immersed in a hypertonic solution. What will happen? • They will shrink + shrivel. • Water will rush out. Some of your cells are immersed in a hypotonic solution. What will happen? • They will swell + burst. • Water will rush into the cells. A saltwater organism is placed in a hypotonic solution. What will happen? • Its cells will swell + burst. • Water will rush into its cells. What is a solute? • The solid stuff you mix with liquid. What is a solvent? •The liquid stuff. What does it mean to say that the Cell Membrane is SemiPermeable? • Only certain substances can diffuse in and out of the membrane. What is the name for the type of membrane transport which requires ENERGY?! • Active Transport What are 2 types of Passive Transport? • Diffusion • Osmosis
