“Cells only come from cells.”
--Dr. Rudolf Virchow
They do this by Mitosis.
Mitosis only happens in body cells.
(somatic cells)
The Cell “LIFE” Cycle has three parts:
1. Interphase
2. Mitosis
3. Cytokinesis
Interphase
G1 phase -- cell growth (size & new organelles)
S phase -- synthesis (copy) of DNA
G2 phase -- cell growth (new organelles)
Mitosis
1. Prophase
- DNA is compacted into chromosomes
- nuclear envelope disappears
- spindle fibers form
Mitosis
2. Metaphase
- chromosomes line up in the middle of the cell
Mitosis
3. Anaphase
- chromosomes are pulled apart by the spindle fibers
Mitosis
4. Telophase
- chromosomes start to unwind
- nuclear envelope forms
- spindle fibers break down
Cytokinesis
- dividing of the cytoplasm
- 2 identical cells are made
Cell Division (8-2)
