Our School As a Cell By: Christopher Gu, Joely Skinner, Naomi Urnes, and Paola Dacosta Nucleus as Office • The Nucleus is like the office because the office and the nucleus both serve as a control center. Nucleolus as Dr. Baugus • The nucleolus is like Dr. Baugus because the nucleolus produces ribosomes just like Dr. Baugus produces teachers. Cell Membrane as Doors • The cell membrane controls what goes in and out of the cell just like doors control who and what comes in and out of the school building. Cytoplasm as Volume of School • Cytoplasm is the jelly like substance inside the cell in which all organelles float in just like the volume of the school holds all the students and staff members inside. Golgi Body as Busses • The golgi body packages proteins and send it to another organelle just like the busses package kids and send them home. Lysosome as Janitor • Lysosomes produce enzymes that destroy bacteria just like janitors clean all dirty places in the school that can cause sickness. Mitochondria as Generator • Mitochondria are the power houses of the cell which provide energy for the cell just like the generator provides energy for the school. Ribosomes as Students • Ribosomes produce protein just like students produce money for the school. Rough ER is like hallways • Rough ER is the a system that transport ribosomes to other parts of the cell just like hallways transport students throughout the school building. Smooth ER as Empty Hallways • Smooth ER is a system of transportation for other organelles just like hallways during class time which are empty. Vacuole as Dumpster • The Vacuole stores the cells water supply and waste products just like a dumpster which stores waste products. Cell Wall as Walls • The cell wall maintains the cells shape and protects the cell just like the school walls keep the shape and protect the school. Chloroplast as Art Room • Chloroplast produces chlorophyll which maintains the plant cells green color just like the art room produce colorful paint which keep the schools color. Pop Quiz! 1. Why is the nucleolus like Dr. Baugus? 2. Why are mitochondria so similar to generators? 3. What does a lysosome do? 4. Ribosomes produce proteins for the cell as ______ produce money for the school. Answers 1. The nucleolus is like Dr. Baugus because they both produce something. 2. Mitochondria are similar to generators because they both produce power. 3. Lysosomes produce enzymes that kill bacteria just like janitors. 4. Students
