CELL MEMBRANE • Layers that cover the cells surface, acts as a barrier between inside and outside of cell. • To control the passage of material into and out of cells. • Covers the outside of the cell. • The cell membrane is like the skin of an apple. CYTOPLASM • Jelly like material found in the cell • Made up of water and chemicals NUCLEUS •Contains the DNA, serves as a control center, membrane covered organelles. •Holds the DNA, the nucleus contains kinds of DNA. •In the center of the cell. •Looks like the core of an apple. MITOCHONDRIA • Function: (Powerhouse of the cell) –Produce ATP from cellular respiration. • Location: Near Endoplasmic Reticulum • How they Look:(Made of two membranes) –Outer surrounds the organelle –Inner provides lots of surface area for chemical reactions to take place. –Shaped like a kidney bean. http://ww w.cartage. org.lb/en/ themes/s ciences/z oology/An imalPhysio logy/Anat omy/Anim alCellStru cture/Mit ochondria /Mitochon dria.htm RIBOSOMES • Functions: They make protein and DNA. • Location in cell: Near the nucleus, nuclear membrane, and on or around endoplasmic reticulum. • How they look: They look like an orange maze, very small, and shaped like a bird foot. http://www.cartage.org.lb/en/themes/Sciences/Zoology/Ani malPhysiology/Anatomy/AnimalCellStructure/Ribosomes/Ribo somes.htm ENDOPLASMIC RETICULUM (ER) • Function: –Makes proteins, lipids, and other materials • Location: –Near Nucleus • Looks like: –Coral in the ocean http://www.nsf.gov/news/overviews/biology/interact07.jsp Endoplasmic Reticulum GOLGI COMPLEX Functions Processes and ships materials Location Around to nucleus Looks Blobs connected to nucleus • http://tainano.com/chin/Molecular% 20Biology%20Glossary.htm Golgi Apparatus LYSOSOMES Functions Destroys worn out or damaged organelles Get rid of waste materials Protect the cell from foreign invaders Location Dots throughout the cell Looks Little blue bubbles • http://www.cartage.org.lb/en/theme s/sciences/zoology/AnimalPhysiolo gy/Anatomy/AnimalCellStructure/L ysosomes/Lysosomes.htm VACUOLE • Function: –storage tank for the cell (food, water,& waste) –central vacuoles help build stalks and stems. • Location: –drift through the cytoplasm • Look Like: –Water balloons http://www.greetin.gs/phoebecell/vacoule.htm CELL WALL • Function: –Provides structure and protection. • Location: –Outside of the cell • Looks like: –A cast for a broken bone. CHLOROPLAST • Function – make food using the energy of sunlight. • Location – near the cell membrane. • How It Looks – green ,half of a sphere http://www.molecularexpressions.com/cells/plantcell.html CHROMOSOMES • Function: Holds the DNA and proteins of cells. • Location: In the nucleus. • Look : Looks like colorful gummy worms. Vesicles • Function - Helps transport materials through the cell and out of the cells. • Location – in the cell. • How it looks – circular.
