Warm-Up What are the 5 things characteristics of a living organism? What are the labelled parts of this cell that you see? What do they do? 1. 2. 3. The importance of cell division Cells Divide for 3 reasons 1. Repair injuries by replacing old cells to organism. 2. Growth of organism 3. Reproduce: Sexually or asexually Cell Cycle Stages through which a cell passes as it grows and divides There are 3 stages: 1. Interphase 2. Mitosis - PMAT 3. Cytokinesis Stage 1: Interphase • Longest stage • Cell grows in size and DNA chromosomes are copied (sister chromatids appear) Stage 2: Mitosis • The 2 copies of DNA move apart and make 2 new nuclei in the cell. • Mitosis is broken into 4 phases: P.M.A.T. Phase 1: PMAT Prophase • Chromosomes thicken and become visible •Nucleus starts to dissolve •Add in drawing Phase 2: PMAT Metaphase • Chromosomes meet in middle of cell •Add in drawing Phase 3: PMAT Anaphase • Chromatids separate to opposite sides of cell •Add in drawing Individual chromosomes Phase 4: PMAT Telophase • Chromosomes stretch out and become invisible •Nucleus starts to form •Add in drawing Stage 3: Cytokinesis • The cell membrane pinches to off to form 2 new cells. • 2 identical cells are formed • 46 chromosomes in humans Cytokinesis in Plants In plants, a structure known as the cell plate forms midway between the divided nuclei. Cell plate Cell wall The cell plate gradually develops into a separating membrane. A cell wall then begins to appear in the cell plate.
