HOW DO CELLS PRODUCE NEW
CELLS?
Chapter 2-9
CELL DIVISION
When you were small, you did not have a lot
of cells.
 While you were growing up, your cells
produced more cells.
 Most cells are able to produce and make new
cells. This process is called
CELL DIVISION = MITOSIS.

CHROMOSOMES
 The nucleus controls cell division.
 Inside the nucleus are chromosomes.
 Chromosomes are made of chromatin.
Chromosomes will decide the
characteristics of future organism.
Chromatin
MITOSIS
Mitosis has 4 phases (steps):
1. PROPHASE
2. METAPHASE
3. ANAPHASE
4. TELOPHASE
PROPHASE

The chromosomes become thick and
shortened.
METAPHASE

Chromosomes line up across the center of the
cell.
ANAPHASE

Chromosomes copy, split and separate.
TELOPHASE

The cell membrane pinches together in between the two
nuclei.
DAUGHTER CELLS

After mitosis is finished, the old cell makes two
identical daughter cells.
Mitosis in animal and plant cells
Animal cells
Plant cells
In animal cells, the cell
membrane pinches to
make two cells.
In plant cells, a new cell
wall and new cell
membrane form down
the middle of the cell.
They form a wall
between the two new
nuclei.

Checking concepts: What is
mitosis?
Mitosis- is a division of a nucleus (a cell)
What controls cell division?
The nucleus controls the cell division.
What is metaphase? What is happening
during metaphase?
 Chromosomes
line up across the
center of the cell.
Where are chromosomes located?
Chromosomes are located in the nucleus
of a cell.
What is anaphase? What is happening
there?
 Chromosomes
separate
copy, split and
What are daughter cells?
Daughter cells are two identical cells
formed as a result of cell division.
How is cell division in plants
different form cell division in
animals?
In plant cells, the cell membrane does not pinch
together to form two daughter cells. A new
cell wall and cell membrane form down the
middle of the cell.
