Heredity Picture Vocabulary Organisms and Environments Heredity Process of characteristics transmitted from parent to offspring. DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) The heredity material of the cell, made up of sequences of four similar chemicals arranged in linear strands, with each strand of DNA called a chromosome. Chromosome A structure that is made of DNA that contains the genetic information needed to make new cells and carry out cell functions. Genes The basic physical and functional unit of heredity made up of DNA. Genotype The genetic makeup of an organism. Phenotype The physical appearance of an organism. Trait A characteristic of an organism controlled by genetics. Dominant The inherited characteristic that is always expressed when present. Recessive The inherited characteristic that is only expressed when no other characteristic is present.
