Cell Division Organisms grow, reproduce, and maintain themselves through cell division. Key Concepts SECTION 1 Cell division occurs in all organisms. Learn about the functions of cell division. SECTION 2 Cell division is part of the cell cycle. Learn about the cell cycle and the process of mitosis. SECTION 3 Both sexual and asexual reproduction involve cell division. Learn how sexual reproduction compares with asexual reproduction. Prepare and practice for the FCAT • Section Reviews, pp. 488, 495, 502 • Chapter Review, pp. 504–506 • FCAT Practice, p. 507 CLASSZONE.COM • Florida Review: Content Review and FCAT Practice 480 Unit 4: Heredity and Human Development Some of these bacterial cells are dividing. How are the cells formed in cell division like the other cells in the photograph? Dividing to Multiply Carefully observe a maple tree samara like the ones shown here. Notice the different parts of a samara. Break a samara into two pieces. Peel back the end of each half, where you broke it. Observe and Think What did you find when you peeled back the ends? How does something as small as a seed produce something as large as a tree? Division Math Take a piece of clay and divide it in half. Now you have two pieces of clay, each half the size of the original piece. Divide each of the two new pieces in half, producing 4 pieces, each a quarter the size of the original piece. Observe and Think What will happen if you keep dividing the pieces in half? How might the division of the cells in living things be different? Internet Activity: Cell Division Go to ClassZone.com to match images of cells dividing with the different stages of cell division. Observe and Think Are the stages the same for plant and animal cells? See Glossary for definitions • All cells come from other cells. • Some cells are prokaryotic and some are eukaryotic. cell membrane cycle eukaryotic cell nucleus prokaryotic cell FLORIDA REVIEW CLASSZONE.COM Content Review and FCAT Practice TAKING NOTES COMBINATION NOTES To take notes about a new concept, first make an informal outline of the information. Then make a sketch of the concept and label it so you can study it later. VOCABULARY STRATEGY Write each new vocabulary term in the center of a frame game diagram. Decide what information to frame it with. Use examples, description, parts, sentences that use the term in context, or pictures. You can change the frame to fit each term. 482 NOTES Mitosis has four phases • prophase: chromosomes become visible • metaphase: chromosomes line up in middle forms chromosomes when cell is ready to divide found in nucleus of eukaryotic cells DNA loose threadlike strands of DNA is copied during interphase
