Cells R’ Us: Cell Similes Project
Topic Due Date: _______________
Simile Rough Draft Due Date: _______________
Completed Project Due Date: _______________
As we explore the topic of cells, you will be introduced to many parts of the cell, all of
which are responsible for helping cells live, grow, and reproduce. In order to demonstrate
your understanding these parts, you will combine your scientific knowledge with a
figurative writing technique called a simile to create a “Cell Simile.”
A simile is a figure of speech in which two unrelated objects are compared to each other
using like or as. For example:
The brain is like the nucleus because it controls the body as the nucleus directs all
the activities of the cell.
1. Familiarize yourself with the cell parts listed below by studying the “Cell Parts Notes”
graphic organizer you completed in class.

2. Select an object or concept to represent a cell. It should be something that you
know about and/or could research. For example, a cell is like a car, airplane, school, or
the human body. All of these things have parts to them that contribute to the overall
function of the object. Turn in your topic by the topic due date.
NOTE: You must have teacher approval of your topic. In the event that multiple students
select the same object/concept, it will be assigned on a first come, first serve basis. (You may
either e-mail your choice to me at [email protected] or write it down on a piece of
notebook paper). If your topic has been selected, you may be asked to choose another.
3. Write a simile for each part of the object or concept you have chosen that
compares that part to a cell structure. You must complete the seven required cell
parts PLUS three of your own choice for a total of ten similes. (Any additional cell
parts will be extra credit.) Turn in a rough draft of your similes by the rough draft
due date listed above. Your similes must include a “because” as discussed & modeled in
class to demonstrate your understanding of the cell part’s function.
4. The project requirements: Turn in the following on the project due date:
a. You will create a power point presentation that you will present to the class.
Similes must be clearly stated; including the “because” to demonstrate your
knowledge of the functions of the cell part. Make sure the relationship to
your chosen object or concept is clear. Include a good visual that represents
each simile.
b. An additional set of your similes (including the because) typed on a separate
sheet of paper. You must write in complete sentences, use correct grammar
and punctuation, and be accurate in your comparison.
c. A short oral presentation to share your project with others in the classroom.
d. Your completed Cell Parts Notes packet.
