GAMETE FORMATION IN ANIMALS
Spermatogeneis
 Process of producing male gametes (sperm) in mammals
Steps:
1. A diploid cell called a spermatogonium reproduces by mitosis.
2. At puberty each spermatogonium undergoes meiosis to form 4
haploid cells.
3. Following Meiosis II, each cell develops into a mature sperm.
Head  nucleus and molecules required by cell
Midsection  holds many mitochondria (Energy source)
Tail  flagellum for locomotion
Oogenesis
 process of producing female gametes (eggs) in mammals
Steps
1. Before birth, the oogonium (diploid cell) reproduces by mitosis
then begin meiosis but stop at prophase I.
2. Meiosis I will continue for one cell each month beginning at
puberty.
3. Oogenesis involves the unequal division of the cytoplasm. The
cell that receives the most cytoplasm after the first division
will continue through meiosis II to form a viable egg.
4. The viable egg contains a large quantity of nutrients to support
the zygote after fertilization.
5. Smaller cells, polar bodies, degenerate.
