Mitotic Cell Division Lab
Learning Objectives:
(1)
(2)
(3)
(4)
Define interphase, mitosis, & cytokinesis.
Distinguish between plant & animal cells undergoing mitotic cell division.
Describe & recognize the various major stages & phases of mitotic cell division.
Arrange the stages of the cell cycle & the phases of interphase & mitosis into correct
order.
Lab Group Structure & Responsibilities:
Group size: ____________
Write the name(s) of the other group member(s) in the space below:
Each group is responsible for presenting a finished mitotic sequence for both plant
and animal cells upon completion of the lab activity. The completed lab activity should
show the stages of mitotic cell division for BOTH plants and animals arranged in correct
order. Stage and phase labels are provided. Lab sheets should have the names of all lab
partners listed as well as the class period.
Each student is responsible for turning in the completed follow-up questions.
The textbook illustrations should serve as an aid for this activity! Study them; learn
them; be able to apply them to “new” diagrams; do well!

Directions:
(1) Use scissors to cut out all the cell illustrations and labels on the sheets provided. Be sure to keep
plant & animal cells separate. It is recommended that you leave an appropriate amount of paper
around the cells and labels in order to facilitate attachment
(2) Match the cells depicting mitotic cell division for BOTH plants & animals to the appropriate
mitotic cell division labels provided on the lab sheets.
NOTE: Some “middle” or “late” phases in animal cell division (9 illustrations) and plant cell division
(11 illustrations) do not match. Refer to the check-list on the label sheet.
(3) Attach the illustrations using either a glue stick or clear tape to a sheet of construction paper. Use
the same arrangement for display as that on the label sheet.
(4) After completing the activity, answer the questions below.
Questions:
1. List the 3 phases of interphase in order from first to last. Give a brief description of
what occurs during each phase. (3 pts @ = 9 pts)
2. List the 4 phases of mitosis in order from first to last. Give a brief description of
what occurs during each phase. (3 pts @ = 12 pts)
3. Describe the 2 different methods of cytokinesis used by animal cells & plant cells.
(3 pts @ = 6 pts)
