Handout for Assignment
1. Provide findings for 8 genes as best you can. For at least 3 genes, all information
should be fully completed based on having read 1+ article as thoroughly as you can.
For the other 5 genes, the required information should be filled out as best you can.
If you have more than 8 genes, you will get extra credit.
A good process for going through this exercise as a group is the following:
- Examine a gene
- Appoint one person in the group to take notes as your group discusses what you find
- Discuss what you find and the strengths and weaknesses of the evidence
- Judge whether the gene is interesting as a potential gene associated with schizophrenia
- Fill in the material below about the gene when you are finished, drawing on your notes
Example
Gene: Name_ Fyn __ Check one:  1 of 3 core genes
 1 of the 20
 New gene
Associated Brain Region__No data___ Associated Disease(s)__Schizophrenia__
Judgment (check one):  Is potentially interesting  Is not potentially interesting
PMID
Paraphrased
interpretations of evidence
17417065 There is a relationship
between polymorphisms of
the Fyn gene, related to the
function of glutamatergic
system, and a performance
on neuropsychological test
of prefrontal cortex
activity in schizophrenic
patients.
Strengths of
evidence
++
Based on
interaction data
and behavioral test
Weakness of evidence
Need more detailed
investigation of the nature
of its interaction with both
Grin2a and GJA5
2. After finishing all the genes in the exercise, please list the few that your group
found to be most strongly interesting genes that seem to warrant further study and
explain why.
