Transcript
Thomas Hunt Morgan’s Conclusions
- modified Mendel’s work
- used the fruit fly (Drosophila) to study inheritance
Why use fruit flies?
- Reproduce rapidly
- Large number of offspring to study
- Life cycle is only 10 – 15 days so it is possible to study many
generations in a short period of time
- Small size so many can fit into a small bottle
- Males and females are easily identified
He discovered that the gene for body colour and the gene for
wing size were “linked” together by some type of physical band
that prevented these two genes from “assorting independently”
during meiosis
The groups of genes are inherited together on linkage groups
(chromosomes)
He discovered the black/normal and the grey/small phenotypes
were a result of crossing-over during meiosis
