Cell Theory and
Prokaryote vs.
Eukaryote
Cell Theory will not be covered in
clas

Log onto google classroom and
complete the cell theory homework.
What is a Cell?

Cell – Basic unit of living things.
Organisms are either:
 Unicellular – made of one
cell such as bacteria and
amoebas.
OR
 Multicellular – made of
many cells such as plants
and animals.
Microscopes


Light Microscope – magnifies tiny
organisms up to 1,000 times.
-Uses light and lenses.
-We use these.
Electron Microscope – magnifies
up to a million times.
-Uses electrons.
The Discovery of Cells

nucleus
Eukaryotes
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
6.
Has a nucleus with a nuclear envelope
Bigger and more complex than prokaryotes
Have membrane bound Organelles
(golgi, ER, lysosomes…etc)
DNA – double-stranded and forms
chromosomes (highly organized)
Can be uni- OR multicellular organisms
Ex: animals, plants, fungi
Question 1


Which type of cells are you made of
prokaryotic or Eukaryotic?
What kingdom do you fall under?
Question 2

Name the kingdoms that have
Eukaryotic cells.
Prokaryotes
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
6.
7.
NO nucleus
NO membrane bound organelles (just
ribosomes)
ALL are unicellular
Smaller than eukaryotic cells
Forerunner to eukaryotic cells (smaller
and more simple)
DNA – single strand and circular
Ex: ALL Bacteria
Question 3

Name the kingdoms that have
Prokaryotic cells.
Similarities
1.
Contain all four biomolecules
(lipids, carbs, proteins, and nucleic acids)
1.
Have ribosomes
2.
Have DNA
3.
Similar Metabolism
4.
Can be unicellular
5.
Have cell/plasma membranes or cell wall
Question 4

What is the difference between the
DNA of prokaryotic and Eukaryotic
cells?

Hint- Shape and number of strands
Question 5

What is the job of the ribosome?

Answer needs to be specific
Draw the two cells in your
notebook

Make sure you label the names and
write out their function.
Eukaryote VS. Prokaryote Picture
Prokaryotic Cell Replication





Watch the video and draw a sequence
of events and summarize what is
happening to the cell. Make sure to
answer the following questions.
6. What must happen first to the DNA?
7. What happens to the cell as it gets
ready to divide?
8. What are the two cells that are
formed called?
9. What type of reproduction is this?
