Protein Synthesis Puppet Teacher Guide Estimated Time 2 days – one day to complete set conversions and one day to make puppet. Anything outside this time is homework. Materials Penny Paper bag Colored pencils Scissors Glue 1. Flip a penny to determine which strand of DNA to copy down into the Set blanks. 2. Transcribe the DNA into mRNA 3. Use one of the two Amino Acid charts to Translate the mRNA to Amino Acids. Use the 3 letter amino acid chart to correctly abbreviate the amino acid into the space provided in the set blanks. 4. Use the Amino Acid – Protein chart to find the Protein and record in the set blanks. 5. Use the Protein – Trait chart to find the trait and record in the set blanks. 6. Note that set 7 has no blanks. Students are to fill in this information on their own. 7. Once all sets are completed, color and cut out puppet parts and glue them onto the bag. The bottom fold of the bag should be able to open as the mouth. KEEP PUPPETS for OH BABY! In the next unit. Protein Synthesis Puppets Use the DNA strands to determine the traits of your puppet. For each set, flip a coin to determine which strand to use. From that strand, determine the complimentary mRNA codon, corresponding amino acids and protein, and trait.
